First corn of the season
I just started harvesting my peaches and cream corn...thought I would share some photos with everyone. Corn is my favorite, is anyone else harvesting corn?

Re: First corn of the season
Oh man, you can't beat Peaches and Cream! Pick it and eat it for lunch right in the garden; no need to heat it up. I try to grow it every year, but I don't always get enough hot weather for a good harvest. Even with good weather, I won't be harvesting until late August.

Your corn looks wonderful! My first planting of corn is just waist high but I am anxiously waiting. I just got my first tassel a few days ago. It sure seems like it should be taller. Eat some corn for me!

C'mon man, you're killing me here! I love peaches and cream, and that's what I have planted. I have my fingers crossed that it might be knee high by the Fourth of July. We've had another cool spring, and I only got about 50% germination out of 250 fresh seeds. Looks like it's going to be another year where there won't be enough corn for the freezer.
Re: First corn of the season

we are in the same boat with Boffer.....our corn is only 6 inch's high and i really dont think it will be knee high by the 4th of july either we need some heat!!
we had problems with our seeds too.....well...come to find out....when we went looking for the corn seed that didnt come up....it wasnt in the ground any longer someone has stolen our corn seeds!!.....do rats do that?

I am sorry about your germination troubles and cool weather.

I don't know rose, birds or squirrels maybe?
Corn? Will it grow or not!
I'm going to try the Peaches and Cream next time! It looks so good! Is it a hybrid?
Here is my first batch of corn, Silver Queen. It did make a few 1/2 ears, enough for a meal. The cause for this was wet weather.

I have since planted 4 beds of corn, 1 silver queen, and 3 of heirloom yellow sweet. Now that the heat has arrived, maybe I'll have corn to freeze this yr.
I laid bird netting over the corn beds til it was about 4 in. tall, for the squirrels would eat the seeds before they could germinate. I saw them doing this but don't want to shoot them.

Yes, I am pretty sure that Peaches and Cream is a hybrid variety. I am growing Silver Queen now as well and it just germinated. Hopefully you will have better luck with your next batch. I have found personally that my corn does much better planted by itself in its own bed. When I try to grow corn around other things in the same bed, it doesn't do well.
Re: First corn of the season
I agree, corn does better by itself, unless you plant less per square. I planted peanuts in the outside sq on one side with the rest in corn, we'll see how it does. I had planted onions last fall and planted the 1st corn in the bed, while waiting for the onions to finish. I don't think corn likes onions.

Re: First corn of the season
Boffer and Rose good luck with your corn and I hope the weather cooperates with you. My corn seeds are several years old and I didn't know how good the germination rate would be so I planted three per square, spread out about an inch apart. I soaked them in slightly warm water for about an hour before I planted them. I got anxious and planted one bed when it was still cool and it took quite a long time for the seeds to germinate and the germination rate was not as good as the second bed that was planted when the weather was warmer. When the plants were 2-4 inches high I chose the best of those and carefully pulled out the smaller ones so I wouldn't disturb the roots of the others. I have had years where my corn is so scrawny and corn barely forms and is not edible. I am hoping for success this year.
