All right, I know you've all been waiting for it...

Tomato Tuesday 2012

Here's the thread to talk about the most popular of homegrown garden crops, the beloved tomato.

I'll kick it off with a picture of my Brandywine indeterminate heirloom tomato that I've planted in my SFG and am attempting to train to a single vine up the trellis. It has a few sets of blossoms. It's also put out some suckers from where the wind damaged leaves were removed. I'll have to nip those off.PNW: Tomato Tuesday 2012 Brandy10

Looking good Gwennifer, it looks like there are several flower buds on it! My tomatoes are taking a beating from the wind and rain that probably won't stop until Friday. I will try a post some pic's late tonight when I can. Good job on that Brandywine!

Pretty gutsy for a new RH. Didn't you get the message that Tomato Tuesday threads are for other regions? yahoo Every time we web footers try and show pictures of red tomatoes, those people on the east coast who talk funny want to know what type of spray paint we used!

Well, with you leading the way, this year it's gonna be different; we'll show 'em! I was just out in the...ahem...pouring down rain, and I'm happy to report that I have a couple fruits. GO PNW!

I forgot to mention that I started my Brandywine from seed and I have a backup on the front porch that I don't know what to do with.

Now boffer, I went out in the rain to get my pic... Where's yours? (I happen to know you have some great shots, I saw them in Too Small's Tall's thread.)

Ripe or not, I was around last year and I know y'all love to talk about them. So here's to 'maters!

Yup, that's the point: all talk, no ripe tomatoes. (relatively speaking). But this year is going to be different...go red tomatoes!

Uh, Gwen, you can't find a place for ONE tomato plant? You're not trying very hard! tongue How about a few a nails in the fence in your picture and letting it run along the rail. You can't have too many Brandywines.

I waited for the rain to quit. Rolling Eyes

These are Mortgage Lifters, and are the first tomatoes that I've ever germinated inside. Seeds were planted on 3/27; they're growing fast in my greenhouse.
PNW: Tomato Tuesday 2012 Dscn1811

These are from the same batch, but had the misfortune of being planted outside. They are looking bedraggled from the rain and wind we've been having.
PNW: Tomato Tuesday 2012 Dscn1812

I've got a bonehead problem in this picture that I need to fix. The plan was for the indeterminate toms on the left to be trellised on the hoops; you can see the rope that creates a semblance of a trellis. I've done that before, and it works fine. I figured the determinate toms on the right might have enough space to grow and be done before the indeterminates got there. Well, for some reason I thought the Early Girls on the right were determinate; turns out they are indeterminate. Embarassed I've gotta figure out some creative trellising pretty soon!

Oh, man, I feel like such a scardy cat....my tomatoes are still hiding in the greenhouse. Except for five days of balmy sunshine, it seemed too cold to put them out. Hope next weekend is warmer. Plus, the Early Girl I took to my mom already has blooms. Besides, where will I put 35 tomato plants?

LavenderDebs, Just after posting, I found a home for at least 5, maybe 7, of the 'maters. A granddaughter who lives out in the country like we do, and is planting their second, ever, garden this year--it should do well as they have both home-grown chicken and pig compost. Wonder what she'll think of my square foot gardening.

Here's my backup Brandywine. It's an orphan. It has survived in spite of being left in this little 6" pot for weeks now. First member in Vancouver to post that they have room for it in their SFG, I will personally deliver it to you!

Whoopsie-daisy! I forgot it was Tuesday today! Thanks Rose, for your updates - last weeks pics look amazing BTW.

My brandywines are still plugging along. We had another hail storm this past week that knocked a couple of blossoms off. They still haven't grown any taller either, but they don't look stressed about the cool weather we've been having. I may end up giving up on cucumbers this year and planting my orphan from the front porch in their square.

How are everybody's tomatoes doing? The weather at my place has been back and forth. I'm having some cool weather things bolt now, but my warm season things don't seem to really be thriving yet. The blossoms on my brandywines just fall off - no fruit beginning yet. I don't think it's a pollination problem since the romas are coming on just fine. Yep, I've been holding out on you - I have two roma tomato plants that I started from seed as well. I'll get some pictures up later!
