Okay, here we go! Mid-Atlantic - Tomato Tuesday 2012 3170584802 I'm honored to present the mid-Atlantic's very own Tomato Tuesday thread. I offer these humble pictures as a beginning - I'm dying to see others' tomatoes as well.

Matt's Wild Cherry (I couldn't help myself, I picked the ripe one last night and it was darn tasty):

Sungold (oh so close!):

Moreton:

My row of tomatoes (sungold, Jersey Devil - the pepper-looking ones, Aunt Ruby's German Green - top right-middle of the picture, Moreton):

So how are everyone's tomatoes doing after the heat wave? I'm hoping I'll get some more fruit to set in these few days of below-90s weather.

I went out to take a picture of my first ripening tomato but I couldn't find it until . . .

Mid-Atlantic - Tomato Tuesday 2012 Img_0619

I looked around and saw this on the ground near the garden. There were no Beagle prints in the mix so I know it wasn't Sophie. Besides she munches them while they're still attached. I don't think one of the bunnies under the shed would be strong enough to "pick" the tomato. My guess is a ground hog.

We have 4 tomato plants...Better Boys, Grape, Celebrity & Cherry. We may have them all in separate boxes next year. Once I saw the video on how to "sucker" your toms, I wish I had started right after we planted them Rolling Eyes They are all doing well!

It's not Tuesday but I finally got a few pictures and wanted to post them. Been having a lot of trouble with them this year. First there was the labeling, when I potted them up labels got lost. Only one was real important to know and that was the cherry going in the hanging bucket. No biggie just started a new cherry. Had 9 strong healthy plants hardened off and ready go(2 Rutgers "Jersey's", 2 Beefsteaks, 2 sweet 100's and 3 cherry's). Then the weather wasn't helping, too hot, too cold or too wet. 4th year growing tomato's first 3 years deer never ate them. Figured they were to strong on the smell and taste for them. This year twice they ate them down to a stump but they all came back. They are a few weeks behind but are producing flowers and fruit.Mid-Atlantic - Tomato Tuesday 2012 Tomato10 Mid-Atlantic - Tomato Tuesday 2012 Tomato11

Well, our tomatoes are doing great! The one in the photo below is my avatar for this month, just about ready to be picked today or tomorrow. With temps around 100 today, it should finish off the ripening process pretty quick. How are everyone else's maters doing??

I'm getting a few cherry tomatoes a day (little red Matt's wild cherry and sungolds). I've got a few globe-type tomatoes that are getting closer and closer. I'm most excited to try the Black Krim (pictured below). In the meantime, I'm still annoyed that the Jersey Devil paste tomatoes continue to have BER. I've put in plenty of calcium, and none of the other tomatoes in the bed seem to have any problems. I just can't figure it out. Sad

Looks like I got some fruit to set during the below-90s temperatures last week, thank goodness! Now I guess I'll prepare for another week of blossom drop.

That is interesting. Usually when we think of "cherry" tomatoes I think of the ones we see in the grocery store....ours are the size of ping-pong balls and sooooo good!!

Ooh - what's the variety of the one you're growing? The sungolds are a good size, but the Matt's wild cherry are like the size of a dime and so flavorful. They taste more like regular-sized tomatoes rather than sweet cherry ones, but they're quite good.

My tomatoes are doing nicely this week. I harvested all this on Sunday:
Mid-Atlantic - Tomato Tuesday 2012 2012-026
And then today, I cooked up a gorgeous ribeye I had given a dry rub and stashed in the fridge for a few days and made a quick panzanella to go with it (tomato is a Moreton):
Mid-Atlantic - Tomato Tuesday 2012 2012-027

The dog is currently enjoying the bone. Very Happy And everything in the panzanella came from my garden, except the bread of course, which I made myself this weekend. I picked up a stand mixer about a month ago and am thoroughly enjoying making homemade bread.

I wish I could figure out why the Aunt Ruby's German Green won't set fruit. I've got one absolutely enormous tomato and the plant itself is probably the tallest in my garden but it keeps putting out flowers that don't do anything. It's very frustrating.

I just read on Grow It Eat It (part of the MD extension) that: extreme heat renders pollen of some plants, like
tomatoes, ineffective. So expect poor fruit set during periods of
extreme heat.

Looks like a brandywine but I could be way off. Now I have read that the yellow brandywine is superior in taste to the pink but would have to have to try them first.

Were did you get a variety of heirloom tomato seeds?
