Watermelons and Snow Peas in the same square? Empty Watermelons and Snow Peas in the same square?

Post  jamesindetroit 5/15/2012, 7:49 am

So..I am wondering.

Since I misplanted two squares...and put peas in where I meant to wait for melons...would I be able to get away with planting the melon in the middle of the peas? By time the melon gets going, the peas should be done right?

Thoughts?

I think you might be on to something. I did the same thing with a cuke and both cuke and peas are climbing the trellis happily. I'm also replacing peas with squash and have been waiting until the peas finish, but maybe I can start the squash earlier than originally planned.

Watermelons and Snow Peas in the same square? Empty Will this solve my rookie problem?

Post  Warbler 5/15/2012, 11:43 am

I have four more vining plants to put into three available squares!! Embarassed

One of the used squares is about 6 sugar snap peas varying in size from 1/4 inch to 6 inch. (cut worms caused the variation. They're under control now I hope!!)

Yesterday I bought a watermelon - the small kind - "Crimson Sweet", it is about 4 inches tall and the plant label says matures in 80-90 days.

So could I put it in the middle of the sugar snap peas? Or how about in the middle of pole beans that haven't yet showed up (planted a week ago), or with cucumber seeds I'm planting today?

I need some kind of solution!

Definately not the pole beans as they will be growing all summer. If your peas were already up and producing, you might get away with it, but they are too small to compete with an established plant. My peas were already 2 feet tall when I planted the cuke and one cuke is not nearly as big as a melon plant.

My suggestion, plant it in a bucket and let it sprawl.

I think the peas would be a good fit here. They will quit right around the end of June, and by then, I expect the Melons to start flowering...so it might be interesting. I'll keep folks posted.

Jame, I think I agree with you for folks down in the South where the heat takes out the peas before the melons are up to any size. But farther North where peas can sometimes be picked much later into the summer might be a problem. Just something to keep in mind. But I am definately going to combine my pea and watermelon/cantaloupe bed next year. Too late for this year.

Well. Here in Michigan, our zone near the lakes gets pretty hot during the summer. Depending on the season we can see 100 degree temps easily...

I would rather have the melon than the peas, as I already have some planted.
