New SFGer looking for mentor
(i never know how to start these)
well, as my topic line says im am new to SFG. my name is sarah and i live in Western KY. i guess I should technically say I'm knew to doing it correctly. I tried last year to use "sfg" but my boy friend refused to listen to me on the dimensions of the boxes so they were way shallow, then I just bought bagged soil i did not realize the importance of "The Mix". I was almost got strawberries but i guess my dog Gypsy decided i did not need them, so she used them as a bed...
So this year i have great boxes, i'm calling around to find what i need to make my soil. i have looked at some plants and have a general plan written and drawn up plans but i relay want this to work. I desperately want to have a mentor. So if there is anyone close by that would be amazing but if not if there is some one that will take me under there wing online that would rock as well. i have Yahoo, Skype, and would download most anything else.
I'm disabled(narcolepsy) so im always home, and i desperately want this to work. so any help would be great.

Re: New SFGer looking for mentor
Welcome Sarah! It's great that you found the SFG forum. The people here are so helpful and nice and always ready to answer any questions you have.
As for a mentor, well, I honestly think you'll do just fine here at the forum because there's always someone knowledgeable around to help. But if you do need to talk to someone directly (or feel more comfortable talking one on one rather than in a group setting), I'm sure there are lots of people here who would love to help. Personally, I'm also always home because I'm a housewife. I'm not an SFG expert but I would love to help

Re: New SFGer looking for mentor
First of all, !
It sounds like you have read ANSFG so I won't belabor the point of how essential that is; I am new to the forum as well and have already found it to be indespensable!
It sounds like you are in the planning phase so I'll share with you a planning site I really liked: growveg.com ( sorry, I'm not tech savy and haven't learned how to post a link yet) it is a 30 day trial you sign up for (no credit card needed) and I found it very useful because you enter your zip and it will populate the plants you can grow in your zone AND it has a SFG setting on it that will automatically calculate how many plants go into 1 square foot. Once done planning, it will also populate a list for you of how many of what veggies you planned for, and show when to plant and harvest, again, catered to your zone!
If you are interested in companion planting, ghorganics.com has a GREAT list!
Hope you find this helpful, and again, Welcome to the forum!
Oh! I think I figured out how to do the links:
growveg.com and ghorganics.com

I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

belladonna.....Welcome to the forum. I agree with those above. There are mentors galore online right here. Just pose your questions, post pictures, ask and you shall get answers. I don't live near your zone but there are plenty who do and know the problems you may face, sowing dates, frost dates and the like. Good luck.

Re: New SFGer looking for mentor
Welcome to the forum Sarah. I am new to SFG but have garden for many years when I decided to make the mel mix I had trouble finding vermiculite. I live in North West Tennessee and found you can order coarse vermiculite from a CO-OP, I got what I was looking for in about a week.
Hope this may help.

Re: New SFGer looking for mentor
This really is the 2nd best place to learn about building a SFG!!! (Besides the book anyway.) All questions are answered cheerfully.
You won't be the only person here dealing with disabilities of some sort, either. I have fibromyalgia, so I feel pretty tired most of the time, and my body gets very sore; getting down on the ground is tough, and getting up afterwards is even worse, so my husband plans to build me some table top beds (often called TT here; that confused me at first) soon. Hopefully he'll be able to do that before my next big growing season begins in the fall.
Anyway, don't hesitate to ask your questions. Read up on what everyone else is doing, too. That will help you avoid problems before they happen, believe me!

Re: New SFGer looking for mentor
hello, belladonnamini! what part of western KY are you in? i live in nashville but travel to ft. campbell, KY twice a month to work on SFG gardens at the base, and to bowling green about once a month to visit the amish. if you are in those general areas, i'd be happy to drop by, meet you in person (yay!) and help you if i can.
