Potato problem

I dug up up one of my Norland Red plants (planted Feb. 25) today because the Reds have come down with a blight. My extension office has told me how to treat them, but that not my question. All three of these potatoes came off the plant. (BTW, I dug it up because the blight had virtually wiped out the leaves so I figured it was a goner anyway).

Why is one of them a dark brown and the others red . . . as they should be? The blight? or something else? thinking

The plant was loaded, but only with BB sized potatoes.

Aw, sorry to hear about the blight, Grandpop! Is it too late in the season for you to restart the plants from the eyes of these baby potatoes in a new location? You could start treating them as soon as they sprout above the soil line to make sure the blight doesn't come back.

Well, I may not have to replant (it's a little late here, because soon I think it will be too hot). But, I do plan to plant more for fall. On top of that I have three varieties in the same bed and the Norland are the only variety which seems to be affected after a week. I think what I will do is just dig up the Norland harvest a batch of "new potatoes" and let the others mature. . . keeping an eye on any blight problems, of course! Thanks!

Is the brown one the "seed" which you planted? I plant reddish potatoes too and often the original potato survives and looks brown, sometimes squishy too but not always. (Or perhaps you cut your starter potato up, in which case it can't be the explanation).

Well . . . I don't really know. Now that you mention it, it does seem they were brown when planted. . . just can't remember. I'm going to dig up another plant today so I'll check that out.
