I love the pattern you are creating. That is going to be a very fancy garden.

Not much time for working today. Have to go to church and then to work. My oldest grandson was a big help today.

Are you using a level to make sure they're fully horizontal? My husband is thinking of doing something like this for our front yard.

Yes, I am using a level. The ground is not level and I am bringing the outside edge about 1/2" lower than the slab.

Re: Very new to SFG
Finished the brick part of the garden then got a 4" rain in a couple of hours. I hadn't diverted the flow from the down spouts yet and one of the down spouts had so much flow that the flow of water made it 4 feet to the garden. It filled up the garden enough so that the bricks on the far end fell.
I don't expect that type of rain very often and I plan to make a permanent diversion on both the down spouts coming off the roof of my patio. The soil you see on the slab was the grass and soil that dug from the inside of the garden to get to the proper depth and remove grass before putting down the weed blocker.
I did get to see that the garden does drain well after a very large rain. But to assist this I believe I will get some sand to put down before the weed blocker. I still have more grass to get out before doing this but the garden is coming along slow but sure.
I have already purchase the materials to make Mel's Mix. I am getting excited about getting this thing going but I want to make sure I get it right the first time. I don't want to say, "Shoulda, coulda, woulda." LOL

Re: Very new to SFG
I have a question for those with more experience. I guess that includes everyone on the forum. lol.
How much of the grass needs to be removed before putting down the weed blocker? There is no way I am going to get it all. Could I use Round up to kill the remaining grass?

Hey Don, if you can lay down a layer or two of cardboard before you place the bed that would probably be fine.

Re: Very new to SFG
Ok! I am ready to put Mel's Mix in the garden. It is a little late to do it this evening because Thursday night is the night I like to watch TV. I will have to mix it up next week when I am off again. I believe I will use my free time to figure out what I can plant this late for spring. The heat is here and it will get no better until October.
I believe I can still plant corn, and maybe melons or cucumbers. I will plant the strawberry plants that I have with intentions of letting them divide. I may be able to make a few squares for next spring.
Time to do some research to see what I plant.

Re: Very new to SFG
It looks GREAT Don! That's a garden plot your wife will love to have outside the back door.
I looked Baton Rouge up, and you're in my planting zone (8b) and you're in the Coastal & Tropical South region. I posted a list of things we can grow here: https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t11962-coastal-tropical-south-what-to-plant-in-may I'd love to have you join the discussions we have in our regional forum!
Corn, cucumbers and melons might still make it since you'll be using MM...However, you'll probably have to baby the plants to get them going in the heat. Maybe you're getting more rain than we are, which would really help!
