Re: Some women
My hubby is the annoying breed that thinks he should be the one building stuff and using his power tools, but is too lazy to actually do it! Lol, some MEN.
Re: Some women
Hubby HATES building/fixing anything, so is glad to leave the tool projects to me and has fudge made for me when I am done! He is just such a worrier and he KNOWS any project I do will end up with at least a small blood-letting!

Re: Some Women
I totally belong here too. For Mother's Day DH offered to take us into Georgetown for Brunch and shopping and I politely declined. I told him I would rather dig in our garden and play baseball in our back yard than get all dressed up and have to entertain the kids as we wait in line and traffic. I love him dearly and appreciate the thought that went into it, but I just want some time to relax with my family. He will never understand my excitement over compost or worms, but when the fruits and veggies of our labor appear this summer, I think he will be happy too.

Before using the Chop saw, I am always CONSIDERING putting on a prophylactic..... tourniquet.
I DO know how to use all the tools and DO, however I DO think hubby HIDES them so I cannot use them when he is gone. lol
He needs me to need him.....
I had to take my youngest to the emergency room last week for a couple stitches, I was "distracted" by the garden and he snuck up to the top of the slide and went down head first . I don't know what he was thinking going head first but when I noticed he was going down I ran to catch him but didn't make it in time, when we got home back to the slide he goes
But anyway GWN I completely agree with you I can use the tools and do but hubby needs to be needed. Very funny!

YUP YUP YUP...
My hubby doesn't place the same value on my growing stuff as I do. I do most all the projects outside the house, but he always moves a shovel full to say he helped  . (longstanding joke) However, I must admit my addiction has gotten so bad that we are having to build a detached garage to put my gardening paraphenalia in so the car will fit!
Really, there are things we have accumulated through the years too... The edger, mower, hedge trimmer, tiller, chainsaw, string trimmer, can full of garden hoses, huge wheelbarrow, power washer, etc. I can't wait to have my own workspace. Then his tools and car stuff will be in the house garage with the car and my construction tools, painting apparatus, and GARDEN STUFF will be in the other one...WAHOO!!!

I'm not a girly girl. I love practical gifts, that I will use. Hubby was told (by his family) that real female gifts cannot have a cord, and that real jewelry is the best choice of gifts. I am also on the buy me a rose bush , instead of a dozen roses camp. Even though I am renting a house, I just bought 3 types of grapes, one blueberry, and two raspberries.

Re: Some women
This year for my birthday (which isn't until June actually), I asked my parents for my first raised garden bed. I think they were a little shocked, but I got my birthday gift over a month early and have been enjoying getting into square foot gardening every since!!!

I actually consider myself a girly girl, but I am with you on the give me a plant not cut flowers and what's wrong with an appliance if I have said I really want one. I would love a drip irrigation system for Mothers Day. Of course a nice gold chain wrapped around the cord or a nice pair of earrings nestled in the bushy plant would go a long way too.

+1! I am definitely a tomboy girly girl. My family has always been the practical sort, so gifts with cords are definitely considered normal among them. It was Hubby I had to convert. Like Kay, I certainly don't mind a little gold 'flash' buried in the box as well! But if it comes down to a choice of one or the other? Cords!

Re: Some women
I love everyone's replies! I am a converted girly girl. Growing up, my best friend was a boy, so we used to run around in the creek, play kick the can, climb trees, build snow forts, etc. But at the same time, I would play dress up with my sister, put on make up and nail polish, and play waitress. In Jr. High, I lost a bunch of weight, and the movie clueless had just come out. So I dressed like Cher everyday with my cutesy outfits, and Mary Janes. I was known as the girl who always wore a skirt and a dress. My friends didn't see me in jeans for three years. Of course, that all fell by the wayside by high school. I am still a bit of a princess in some ways, but going to Africa and working with children who have nothing but are so happy really changed my perspective on things. Instead of jewelry and clothes, I strive to use my money and time to spend quality time with my children, create memories, and have fun.

Dare a man step in here
I would start a pile now, if you haven't already. No need to wait on a composter I actually retired my tumbler as I find it much easier to do the composting deeds right on the ground.
I am my gardens worst enemy.

Personally, I am planning on building 2 tumblers and keeping my pile as well. I want to have one tumbler 'working' while the other is being filled. Then, what is left at the end of the season will go to the ever-growing pile. I generally don't have the time or energy to do regular turnings of the pile, so I am hoping the innoculations with the tumbler stuff made from the kitchen scraps and pulled weeds from the beds will give it a good boost right before the snow flies.

OOH, how cool! Now I finally understand why, every time I look up "compost" on craigslist, I get lots of ads for these blue barrels! DUH. How well does it work, Rooster?
Re: Some women
Those blue barrels are also great for rain barrels! Can't seem to have to many of the darn things when we hit a dry spell.

HMMM mothers day...
From son I hope to get a bucket of morels...
From hubby I hope we can build several new 4x4s.
Although I find that there is something peaceful and therapeutic about weeding, and I have been doing it for a month now, I have decided enough is enough. Quack Grass YOU WIN!
I am going to JUST SFG, and totally covered gardens.

My thoughtful husband just talked to the neighbors about starting a compost pile (we share the yard with another house - two big houses with itty bitty yard space and our other neighbors are very close by too).
The neighbor is all for a compost pile as long as it doesn't stink. (which I think all the neighbors would agree with). Now I just want pallets!
Re: Some women
I knew I liked this place! Sisters!!
I got a nice bonus last year from work and spent part of it on a compost tumbler. Just dumped some nice black compost on to a tarp last night and started filling it up again. I also bought a used banjo...but hey, I wrote songs about gardening and cooking "real" food so it's part of my gardening life too.
I love my tools, the smell of fresh cut wood, and the feeling of completing a project. I'm getting lots of ideas from this site! The hubby is getting nervous.
