Apparently I belong here too. My birthday was a few days ago and I got my two new SFG boxes, soil to fill them, and stuff to build my trellises with! I have no idea what my husband had intended on getting me, but he was late ordering it and tried to talk me into one box so he could still get whatever it was he'd planned on...I refused to reduce my number of desired boxes once more; I wanted three, but we only had cash for two.

As for tools, I've been griping for years about how my dad walked off with a bunch of my tools, insisting they were his. Rolling Eyes He can't do that any more...I now live several states away so my toolbox isn't just a few blocks away any more. I'm still trying to replace everything!

Man has always favored gems that catch the sun a certain way
But there is no greater treasure than the one I plant today
For a ruby cannot shelter me from the icy winds
And a lump of gold cannot supply the air that we breathe in
All the diamonds in the world a hungry child will never feed
So why are we counting diamonds when we should be counting seeds?

I reckon we all have our priorities right. In my family and my DH's family I was always the odd one out. It is so nice to be among like-minded people.

Love the poem GWN. I have never understood how shiny rocks and metal became of such value. Though I do have my fair share of them from gifts (my DH loves to give me bling), I would never spend the money on them myself.

I love it, Plantoid! My dad was the 'tool man', and could fix anything. He is also the one that used the old Singer to make our doll clothes! (After all, sewing is just small-scale construction). Mom made OUR clothes, Dad made the doll clothes and the furniture covers (including the drapes and car seat covers). My sister is the better sewer (that looks funny - I mean someone who SEWS, not the toilet pipes! I guess I mean seamstress?) but she says I inherited the 'Tool Gene' as she calls it! She wouldn't be caught dead with a Dremel, but she knows who to call when the faucet or roof leaks!

It is actually a song
I have the garden gene and came by it honestly....

With This Seed

With this seed I plant the hopes of what I might reap in the fall
May it rest a little while until the sun has warmed the soil
When it is ready to, I hope that it will send
A little root a little deeper, towards the sun a little stem
With a seed I plant tomorrows, I would not be here today
Were it not for someone clever who was planting yesterday

Man has always favored gems that catch the sun a certain way
But there is no greater treasure than the one I plant today
For a ruby cannot shelter me from the icy winds
And a lump of gold cannot supply the air that we breathe in
All the diamonds in the world a hungry child will never feed
So why are we counting diamonds when we should be counting seeds?

It’s the seed that fuels the part of me that loves to watch it grow
From the tiny little groundswell to the first of leaves to show
To the stem that reaches up to where the sun can shine upon
The leaves and photosynthesis can show us how it’s done
My grandfather was a farmer, guess he passed that on to me
And a finer an inheritance a child could not receive

With this seed I plant the hopes for generations from today
May its strongest offspring flourish and its weakest fade away
It’s the way it’s always happened prior to the world of men
Who to maximize their profits would destroy it in the end
With this seed I plant tomorrows, I would not be here today
Were it not for someone clever who was planting yesterday

I belong here too. I own more tools than my husband does. One time I was chatting with some other women about tools and there was a guy staring at us with a big grin on his face. We asked him what was the matter and he said, "There is nothing hotter than women with power tools." Very Happy

I told my husband a long time ago when our kids were little and we were strapped for cash to stop buying dozens of roses for Bday and anniversary and buy me rose bushes instead. The bushes are cheaper and last longer.

Yep I'm here too. Power tools for Christmas and Gardening tools for Valentines Day. Oh and last year I got a knife sharpener.

The best thing I ever had asked of me was from the "Ole Man": If I buy new lights for the kitchen you think you can wire them up? Needless to say we went and bought new lights and I put them up.

Hubby does not buy me flowers anymore, I think it is such a waste of money. I run around town every Monday getting Sunday papers for free in my attempt to become an extreme couponer then spend a few hours clipping and a few hours making lists. I can get a large cart of groceries for about $40.00. All of my tops I buy on the clearance at the end of season and all my jeans are factory seconds, I have to pairs of shoes that are identical (white slip on sketchers). Sometimes hubby loves it and sometimes hubby hates it, I am very low maintnence. It makes him hard to buy anything for me because I never ask for anything. Last night he was at work and I sent him a birthday wishlist and all he could say was WOW. The list consisted of 4 cattle panels, enough compost, peat, and vermiculite to fill 6- 2x5 boxes, a roll of weed cloth, and 2 pyramid planters (thanks to Josh). Lucky for me he used to be in construction and we have lots and lots of tools, he is super handy, I am guessing he will make the planters and between my parents, in laws, and sister I will be very close to having all the supplies for my next project. He also for no reason bought me a Plant Inn and a compost tumbler a few weeks ago. I love you him. He also doesn't like me to build things because he thinks I will chop my hand off, lol, fine by me, his woodworking skills are much better/faster than mine but if you need something welded, I'm your girl Wink

And a moment to brag: For mothers' day, PapaVino bought and had delivered 5 yards of steer compost! Stuff is the real deal. Our daughter/son-in-law's dog (who hangs out with us while her folks are at work) sniffed it, and declared it good stuff by rolling in some of it. With the ant-hill compost, mixed half and half, it will be really, really good and loose high-nitrogen compost. Smells like the back lot at the Pendleton Round-Up! Can you say Bull-S--t? Sure you can.

Ahhhh - like minded sisters and brothers unite!

When I was a kid I would hang out with my grandpa who could fix anything and everything... he taught my mother everything he knew... and in turn I have learned much from both of them in my life.

In my 20's my beautiful mother gave me a Craftsman drill! I cried when I got it - I was SO thrilled!! My wonderful friends got ME a gift card to Home Depot as a wedding gift (I can wonder the isles of HD for days when I have the time, Menards and Fleet Farm too). I love that people "get me". I love that I have all the tools I need to do what I want to do!

My dear husband is the one to do the dishes and the laundry WAY more often that I, but I am the first one to grab the tools to fix a door that won't close or tear apart the drain because it is leaking. (shh - don't tell him I told you, he likes to keep his domestic skills a secret)

This is a wonderful thread! I have loved reading this and I am learning the true joys of diggin' in the dirt and getting all psyched because I have little shoots coming up in my own garden! I will be honest though, I still don't want to be apart from my makeup and jewelry! (I know...I am just an amateur, but I am being honest lol) Shocked

Nothin' wrong with makeup and jewelry - says the woman that has been known to start cruisin' the garden still in dress and heels! Some women - Page 2 889526 The 2 most repeated phrases from Hubby are:

1. You better not have hurt yourself! (usually heard after a scream or loud thump)

2. Shouldn't you change your clothes first? (usually causing a distraction and a dumping of *fill in* down said clothing)

Love to see this thread renewed!

I used to use tools all the time, but now I have to let my husband do that sort of thing for me. Even after six years I still refer to the toolbox as mine, since most of the tools we have were mine before we met. I envied him being able to use a saw and drill to build my flower bed today.

Nothing at all wrong with makeup & jewelry...my toenails always have polish on them, particularly now that we live in a place where sandals are a must-wear for 3/4 of the year. Girly stuff has it's place, even in the lives of tomboys.

But oh, how exciting it is to get my hands in some good, rich soil and grow those plants! I think my excitement about growing things is rubbing off on my sons. (Now to get them excited about tasting this stuff when it's ripe!)
