Some women

Some women fantasize about shoes, designer clothing, and jewelry. I fantasize about farm land, animal poop for compost, getting chickens, and growing delicious food. My dad gave me my birthday money early and I used it to buy compost and vermiculite. I asked for garden beds from my mom until I decided to build them myself.

I have lost a bunch of weight lately, so new clothes would be nice. But I'll stick with the cheap one's from Kohl's that are okay if they get ruined. Between the kids, me digging in dirt, and my tendency to miss my mouth while eating, that's definitely the way to go.

Well at least you have your priorities straight!

I have been known to have a truckload of garden mix or sea soil (a locally produced composed seawead mix) delivered for Mother's Day...

oh yes... I am one of those women too.

Bark for Easter
Wood for raised beds on Mother's Day
Compost for Valentine's Day
Gift Cards for Home Depot or Nurseries for Birthday or Christmas...

My DH gave me a wheelbarrow once as a gift. His family thought it was hilarious.

I got the usual slippers, gloves, toiletries from them. the slippers and gloves nwere always too narrow for me as they went ny their onw sizes. I don't think they ever really got to know me properly.

My DH should be on the cover of Time Magazine as Man of the Year. One time he got me for a "no special occasion" present a compost bin.

Then one year for Christmas he got me a paper towel holder.

(Okay, so it was wrought iron and marble, and was absolutely perfect in our kitchen. Now that we have moved, it is still absolutely lovely!)

Then, the next year, he got me a toilet paper holder.

(Okay, so it is also wrought iron, holds a couple of rolls, is very attractive, and he bought it for me the Christmas that we were in the middle of buying the restaurant, for the restaurant. The purchasing process was so stressful, and so often looked like it was going to fall apart, that the vote of confidence was as wonderful as the tp holder!)

So, sorry, I got went a little astray, but he would buy me more compost bins over fribbles and gewgaws anyday!

And that's why he is DH!

Hey men like tools for special occasions. I never really understood that, but I'm starting too. I would love my very own set of power tools, preferably in pink so hubby wouldn't steal them

I started buying my wife tools for presents because she kept borrowing mine, and I couldn't find them when I wanted them.

Pink tools are generally a sales gimmick. They are more cheaply made and underpowered. Buy real tools that fit your hands, and then spray paint them so ugly that your husband goes ugh! Seriously!

I used to request power tools..for MY holidays..was really for hubby..cause he won't buy for himself lol...so I would remember things he wanted and ask for that ..then tell him he could use them for me!

Now I ask for garden stuff lol..he has to go for his own! All's fair in love and gardening!

ME TOO...... I'm very difficult to buy for if it comes to perfumes (too sensitive), or cosmetics (too sensitive), clothes (never fit and the wrong style) or girly stuff like that.... I have been asking for compost and manures and wood for my sfg and seeds and trays.. turning the old chicken shed into a potting/seedling shed, fluorescent lights for grow lights, a heater for the potting shed....lol

I always had the best tools...I always did the improvements to my mom's home, and my brothers always took my tools!

After 20+ yrs my DH claims my tools are his, but I have my own toolbox. It's the one with the complete sets, and his is the mish-mash.

Working in a hardware store helped round out my box!

When I started growing roses my presents became watering wands, garden hutches, etc. Now I want a yard...to have greenhouse and bigger garden - a much bigger price item!

I have collected a small smattering of power tools, but since we have a small house with no garage (read: no workshop ) I just check out whatever tool I may need from work for the weekend and bring it back on Monday morning. Hubby is very grateful that I am not a high-maintenance woman

(altho' he has not priced table saws lately! )

Add me to your list. I will spend $100 on raised beds...then buy clothes at Goodwill. I will spend $100 on a good knife....then root through garage sales for $0.25 books. I will spend $70 for a good spade....then get $10 jewelry from a thrift store. I will spend $30 for a bag of vermiculite...then buy a cast iron omelet pan from St. Vincent d'Paul for $2.99 (and consider it the find of the year!). Priorities, you know.

My DH and I do not exchange gifts for anything anymore. We have lived in very small towns for a long time, we feel that we tend to purchase things when we feel the time is right, and having moved 5 times in the past 4 years, I really have no interest in anything except what I need.
Getting ready to move, it seems to sad to just throw out gifts you have been given, but have absolutely no use for.

That being said, recently we went from being very far in debt for a very long time to being debt free, one day last April, the money came through, so I went into the city and bought my husband one of them new table saws....

Someone mentioned power tools (actually several someones). I have a hilarious story about power tools.

A few years ago, when we were starting the renovations on our home (getting ready to create and install random length pine board (1"x6") flooring throughout) we needed a chop saw. My ex had absconded with the one I'd had previously. So... we went to Home Depot (my home away from home)... on Father's Day. We were in the power tool section comparing the various chop saws to figure out which one would be a good match for our intended projects. The sales guy came up, and I was asking him questions that he was answering to our satisfaction.
We decided on the one we wanted, and I indicated that to the sales person. He looked at Steve and with a huge smile said "lucky guy!! Getting a chop saw for Father's Day!" At this point, Steve looked at him (with a wonderful poker face) and replied... "no, SHE is getting a chop saw for Father's Day! I doubt she'll let me use it much."
As the commercial might say... Chop saw $135.88, safety goggles $14.88...look on sales person's face... PRICELESS!

Oh... my Easter bark mulch will be delivered Saturday

Finally--I found a place where I fit right in. I told my husband I wanted a huge rock and perfect man that he is, he bought me a house with lots of rocks around it--five acres worth. And when we renovated our apartment way back when, he bought me a power sander...made me so much happier than diamonds would have--last summer, we had a great fence put in around the garden to keep out the deer. My idea of heaven is being able to stay at the country house without leaving for months at a time. This summer, that's the plan. I can't wait to go out in the gardens!

I remembered my favorite present to date (for living in a small place) - pig-skin suede gauntlet gloves.

Perfect for dealing with roses and cacti!

@ GG - Savers is my favorite store! I love how they organize it. Makes it so easy to find things. And it keeps me from the zoos of the other thrift stores. Go Savers!

Dare a mere man with chop saw , band saw , bench saw SDS rotary , hammer drill drill , normal drill , battery drills , electric jigsaw ,full socket set ,full spanner set from 1 mm to 32 mm R&OJ ,plus a lot of other stuff such as building gear lazel levels and a small electonic workshop as well as an electric Mantis rototiller with tiller tines , aeriator and dethatcher attaschments , two long handled spades ,two long handled forks , a long handled shovel , a long handle nurserymans rake , a glasshouse and raised beds ... admit that he has an all singing all dancing electic singer sewing machine , three bespoke suits & a couple of bottles of " Opportune " after shave ?
