GMO Seeds

I do not want to be eating anything from GMO seeds and sure don't want it in my garden. How do I know I'm not ordering them when I order from seed companies?

If you order heirloom seed that are organic, you should be fairly safe. Most of the companies with packets in the big box stores get their seed from Seminis, which is owned by Monsanto (the GMO tyrant)
DO check with the supplier in question though, to make sure. There are several that come to mind that are safe. Seed Savers Exchange is one of them.
While most of the seed sold for home gardeners are not GMO, they might be offered by companies that are putting money in Monsanto's pocket.

Jan, I just assumed that I was getting the right seeds by ordering from Johnny's Seeds and Fields. Do you know anything about them? There is a petition to get your congressmen to push for getting food products labeled if they use GMO and I signed it yesterday. I had no idea that 85% of processed, nonorganic food used them.

I shifted almost entirely to Heirloom/Heritage/Open pollinated varieties this year. Of these, a large portion are organic. I expect that next year will be much closer to 100%.

I'm pretty sure that if you purchase organic heirloom open-pollinated seed, any GMO influence will be wholly accidental (an unfortunate byproduct of the genre).

The other solution is to save your own seed whenever practical or possible. I've been doing that with some flowers for some time and hope to do it with vegetables.

If it says USDA Certified Organic, then it's not a GMO. Most seeds you can buy will not be GMO because an agreement is normally signed between the owner of the patent(ie: the seed producer) and the user of the seed(normally a farmer). I'm not actually sure if home gardeners can even get GMO seed except via contamination from a close by farm(and then only if you save seeds).

However, Monsanto(the biggest GMO seller) recently bought Seminis, which is a vegetable seed company that provides seeds to a lot of other companies. Without bringing this conversation to a whole new level(hopefully), Monsanto is generally believed to be a company that does a lot of bad business practices. I for one will be doing research as to who does business with Seminis and then cut all ties with that seed company until they stop doing business with them. Better safe than sorry in my books.

Thank you all so much for the information. Since I've bought most of my seeds already this year, I'll just hope they aren't GMO. Next year, I'll be getting the heritage and organic.
