Worst Garden Pest - Page 2 Empty Re: Worst Garden Pest

Post  Too Tall Tomatoes 3/16/2012, 8:37 am

Two days ago I bought a flat of pansies to plant around the house. Wanting to keep the rabbits away from them, I liberally dusted them with rabbit repellant. This morning when I went outside to inspect the flower beds, I noticed a pansy flower head laying on the ground. Now did it maybe fall off when I was replanting them? Did a rabbit bite it off? I don't know for sure but I'll tell you this: If I see any definitive proof that a rabbit's been eating those pansies, it's war! Twisted Evil

I love animals but not when they're messing around with my plants.

Worst Garden Pest - Page 2 Empty Raccoons...

Post  curio 3/16/2012, 2:52 pm

These buggers don't bother the compost bin... but when they destroyed our newly sodded back yard and then ate nearly $3,000 worth of koi from my pond, it became war. Twisted Evil

Glad that I don't have to deal with raccoons, they sound positively evil! Shocked

My mum has problems with possums, she gets something growing nicely and then one night the possums come along and have a feast. Last time it was her cucumbers and all of her passion fruits, problem is they are a native animal and there's not much you can do other than net your crops and hope the little buggers don't find a way in!

Glad I'm not near the bush so I don't have that problem.

Worst Garden Pest - Page 2 Empty Voles

Post  Grandpop 3/16/2012, 4:33 pm

Yes, voles and not moles . . . (although I haven't figured out the difference) are the worse things I have to deal with. I don't see how anything that eats so much can be small enough to fit in those tiny tunnels. So, when I put up my boxes I covered them with mesh to keep them out. Hopefully they don't have a supply of wire cutters and my problem will be solved.
