The Garden Song Empty Re: The Garden Song

Post  sfg4uKim 3/6/2012, 6:55 pm

LOL Wonder if it can be adapted to SFG?

Inch by inch, square by square
Little water, little care
You won't need a rake or hoe
You'll make your fertile soil.

Original Lyrics:

Inch by inch, row by row
Gonna make this garden grow
All it takes is a rake and a hoe
And a piece of fertile ground

Inch by inch, row by row
Someone bless these seeds I sow
Someone warm them from below
Till the rain comes tumblin down

Pullin weeds and pickin stones
Man is made of dreams and bones
Feel the need to grow my own
Cause the time is close at hand

Rainful rain, sun and rain
Find my way in natures chain
Tune my body and my brain
To the music from the land

Plant your rows straight and long
Temper them with prayer and song
Mother Earth will make you strong
If you give her love and care

Old crow watchin hungrily
From his perch in yonder tree
In my garden Im as free
As that feathered thief up there

Words and music by Dave Mellett

The Garden Song Empty The Garden - SFG Style

Post  sfg4uKim 3/6/2012, 8:17 pm

(With apologies to Dave Mellett)

Inch by inch, square by square
Little water, little care
You don’t need a rake or hoe
You’ll make the perfect soil

Square by square, inch by inch
Save on seeds, use just a pinch
You don’t have to be a grinch
But conserving where you can

Pullin weeds and pickin stones
Not in these cute little zones
Add a grid to make your own
Perfect garden quilt

Water by hand if there’s no rain
Find your way in natures chain
Tune your body and your brain
To the music of the land

Don’t plant in rows, they’re too long
Temper them with prayer and song
Add a flow’r, you can’t go wrong
If you give it love and care

Old crow watchin’ hungrily
From his perch in yonder tree
Protect your squares so easily
Stop that feathered thief up there

The Garden Song Empty Re: The Garden Song

Post  GWN 3/6/2012, 11:11 pm

I wrote a garden song a few years ago
called
With this seed
If anyone is interested I can link to where you can hear it

With This Seed

With this seed I plant the hopes of what I might reap in the fall
May it rest a little while until the sun has warmed the soil
When it is ready to, I hope that it will send
A little root a little deeper, towards the sun a little stem
With a seed I plant tomorrows, I would not be here today
Were it not for someone clever who was planting yesterday

Man has always favored gems that catch the sun a certain way
But there is no greater treasure than the one I plant today
For a ruby cannot shelter me from the icy winds
And a lump of gold cannot supply the air that we breathe in
All the diamonds in the world a hungry child will never feed
So why are we counting diamonds when we should be counting seeds?

It’s the seed that fuels the part of me that loves to watch it grow
From the tiny little groundswell to the first of leaves to show
To the stem that reaches up to where the sun can shine upon
The leaves and photosynthesis can show us how it’s done
My grandfather was a farmer, guess he passed that on to me
And a finer an inheritance a child could not receive

With this seed I plant the hopes for generations from today
May its strongest offspring flourish and its weakest fade away
It’s the way it’s always happened prior to the world of men
Who to maximize their profits would destroy it in the end
With this seed I plant tomorrows, I would not be here today
Were it not for someone clever who was planting yesterday

That is really nice! How wonderful to have created and recorded so much. Do you prefer writing lyrics first then intrumentals or does it all flow at the same time?
Writing intrumentals is easier for me. Expression through harmony and melodies feels more compete than (my) words. Have not publicly recorded one note. It's a dream though!

I write the melody first and carry a little hand held recorder around with me and then when I walk I carry a yellow pad and let the melody go through my head until words come.
I should actually say, I DID....
I wrote a few hundred songs and recorded 5 cds and then 3 years ago was diagnosed with advanced endometrial cancer and needed surgery, chemo, radiation ....
and somehow all the songwriting just went away.
I am fine now, I just have not written a song since that fateful diagnosis.
Perhaps this year in the garden it will all come back to me, as I harvest the tons of veggies I intend to grow Smile

thank you for listening

Congratulations to a fellow survivor. 5 years this month. And gardening is a wonderful therapy. Loved the message in the words of the song.

Seeds survive calamities like floods. Trees survive and regrow like the famous fires in Yellowstone Park. I hope for you one day your own story will suddenly become inspiration. I'm facinated with the mystery of writing music. Sometimes you try to write and nothing happens. Sometimes you are not trying and click, the music is evolving. It is a whole other dimension of existence for me, time vanishes, chores go undone, but in a matter of a few minutes to a couple hours, a song is born.

I'm facinated with the mystery of writing music.
For me it was a political situation, the first day of the Iraq war 2003, I was so depressed, despondent almost... My husband said... why don't you write a song about it.
I have no music training , had never even written poetry.
But it all started there, and I got so much support, I just kept writing.

There is another gardening song on there, for some reason I cannot link the song directly
but if you scroll down, it is called HERE ON THE FARM

Thank you, found the song, Here On The Farm, I enjoyed it too. Continue your good health and who knows what else the world of music will bring to you. I use to create a lot more and slowed way down assuming abundant talent was gifted to others. In any case, the urge to write comes and goes. Music is one of the best friends you can have!
