I built two new one-foot-wide beds against the walls in my yard. My plan was to grow pole and bush beans throughout (about 16 feet total) but to have cucumber plants and zucchini spread along the ground to provide shade. Will this work well or am I best growing these upwards?

Ooo...good question. I've been wondering about this! How about cowpeas and tomatillos? Do we grow those vertically, or are they bushy little guys?

Unless you get a vining zucchini, it will be pretty bushy. I found a squash that if eaten young, you eat it like zucchini, or you can let it mature to a winter squash stage. It looks like it is a vining squash, and would make a good trellis squash. I think it's called trombocino squash. I heard it is more resistant to some of the bugs and diseases that zucchini is susceptible to. I am growing regular zucchini as well on the corners of my 3 sisters bed.
