My First Seedlings
My girls and I planted broccoli seeds on Thursday. The packet said 10-21 days to germinate. I set the seed tray on a heating pad set on low. This morning 5 seedlings were already growing. I didn't even have my light set-up ready, but fortunately I had bought new bulbs for the light since they were burnt out, so I quickly set up a table and a stack of boxes to make it high enough. Of course, it's not necessarily a good thing, since they may get too big or leggy before it's warm enough to set them out. But, I am excited to be officially started now.

Re: My First Seedlings
Congratulations Kate. Those heat mats make a big difference in how quickly seeds will germinate.
Remember, the broccoli seedlings can be set out 4 or 5 weeks before your avg last frost date. They can take a bit of frost as small plants, just not a hard freeze.

I didn't know seedlings weren't supposed to look all tall or "leggy" until I started reading up around here. I am as amateur as they come. I just set up a light for the seedings. I will probably just end up buying broccoli transplants. Good luck on yours!

Re: My First Seedlings
I know what you mean about the broccoli sprouts. I sowed mine on Sat and 2 days later I've got a few sprouting.
Above: a few DiCicco broccoli just starting.
and here are a couple of Munchkin broccoli sprouting. I've got to get my lights up TODAY. With a heat mat, they get enough heat that they can sprout earlier than expected.

Re: My First Seedlings
I knew the heat would help them germinate, just not that it would be that fast. And my girls were so excited they planted many more than I intended, so I either need to convince hubby we need 2 4x8 boxes or I'm going to have to find somebody to take them or get rid of them.

Has anyone ever tried to transplant spinach? Mel says to sow the seeds directly into the mix but just wondering if anyone has ever transpanted some......

Re: My First Seedlings
Hi floyd, I have successfully transplanted spinach, but it was already growing out in the garden. Spinach really likes cool weather, which is probably why the direct sowing recommendation from Mel.floyd1440 wrote:Has anyone ever tried to transplant spinach? Re: My First Seedlings
I will try to and see how it goes. Here is my plan though and you can fill it with any comment. So here is my strategy.
Start seeds inside. After they get 4 sets of leaves, I plan to move them out to the garage where is close to ambient temps.
Then for the last week move them down by my SFG and plant them
LOVE any feedback
Thanks;
Floyd

@ Floyd, The reason you want to start spinach outdoors it transplanting it encourages bolting. Unless you want to braise the leaves, they are tough and yucky and compost.
@ Kate, I used to sprout all kinds of things in a stacked water-based salad sprout container. It had broc (and lentils) as part of the mix. I know they work, so I'm going to use those for my broccoli plants. Yes, they're broccoli!
