Greetings From Columbia, SC

I have a small container garden, herbs and tomatoes in Irmo, but our garden is located in Columbia, SC. We grow our gardens to help teach children how to make healthier food choices by growing their own food.

We had so many problems with squash bugs and borers that I don't think we will be planting yellow squash this spring. We have looked into planting early so that the squash vines will be strong by the time the nasties come out, but it just might be more effective to plant another veggie.

We learned the importance of having good soil the hard way. Halfway through our growing season we discovered our dirt was just that, DIRT! We thought our bags of mushroom compost were enough, but they were not.

Our tomatoes suffered the most. While we had some success with our Sun Gold, green Zebra and Cherokee purples, our black Krim and Rutgers were a total loss.

We finally got out and scooped about three pickup truck loads of horse manure. was too late for the tomatoes, but our okra shot up to about 4-5 feet high. We saved the seeds and are willing to share! We had lettuces and Tat Soi that were suburb!

Our fall garden was awesome! Great lettuce again and we are still harvesting Collards and Brussels sprouts

Looking forward to fall. We will be investing in Zoo Poo and we will be using the SFG method.

It was great meeting you last night. Your efforts here in Columbia are quite inspiring. I loved hearing the stories and meeting the young entrepreneurs. I hope we can work together to help Gordon go SFG ! He will LOVE it - especially the no weeds part lol - I read through your blog at at Auntie Karen's and I felt your pain. I think we have a great connection and opportunity here. Welcome to the Forum. The members are so enjoyable and the moderators are good people and always try thier best to help make SFGing a positive and productive adventure.

Such a great way to expose kids to different types of food so they can make healthier choices. It is amazing so many kids don't even know where most of their foods come from, or what it looks like when it is fresh.

we will be using the SFG method.

Glad the Fall garden was better than the Summer. I'm sure it was distressing to find the plants just were not getting the nutrition they needed. SFG and Mel's Mix make gardening so much easier and the fact that there are so few weeds makes gardening possible for me.
