Hello, I'm newish to SFG (have read both books over last year) and have a background with Hydroponics tomatoes (tho my yield wasn't what I wanted) and old fashioned gardening. After spending the last year or so trying to figure out how to enjoy my patio garden again this year I plan to do some SFG and look forward to getting help and other info as well as providing any insights I can.

Thanks for having me, love the concept of SFG and am really excited to try it!

Welcome to the site James,

when you read your 2006 edition of ANSFG did it reveal some strange new ideas or were you already halfway there from your past experiences.

Keep us supplied with loads of pictures as you get making your beds and as you start your ANSFG in earnerst .

Do you think you will have a bed ready in time to join in the great carrot growing race this year ..

It could be very interesting fif your using your hydrophonic knowledge on veg in Mel's Mix

Glad to have you contribute to the group.

There is a lot of information in the older SFG book and I like it, but double digging, weeding and amending are just too much work. Build your SFG using the method stated in ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING book. The growing medium is more nutritious and there are so few weeds, it is amazing.

You will find us a friendly group.

Looking forward to hearing about your progress, Once you have completed the first week of membership here, feel free to post some photos too.

I assume you have the ANSFG book. If your going to try SFG, do the following.

Read the book, follow the book and collect your harvest. Try to follow the instructions that Mel writes about. You will have great success. Your help is here on the forum.

I will be making a hybrid SFG/Wick bed to see if it works. Tho my current set up will run 2ftx8ft consisting of 3 boxes, two 2x1 wine boxes and one 2x4, sadly that's all the room I have for my outdoor section.

However Carrots are on my to-grow list for this year (will be my first time growing them) and I was thinking of using a 2x2 or 2x1 by 10in deep bed slipped under my raised bed (they will be raised about 2.5 feet so I can get to them easily.

PS I'm super glad Mel included the illustration in Ch. 10 page 183 it will allow me to have a garden that I can tend with little assistance.

Figured I'd show a picture of the wine boxes I plan to use:

Several local stores toss these out, they measure 2'x1'x7" giving me a 1" mulch area at the top of my MM to help keep the high winds out (50mph to 110mph gusts) I have the support issue figured out so the only issue I worry about is the mix drying out too fast in the higher winds that we get during the growing season.

What a great idea, Greetings 832433

and especially nice for small patios. Because they are smaller, you can get away with thinner wood than you would need on a 4X4 box.
