Friday Rookie Topic - Garlic

i know its early to be thinking about fall planting of garlic....but...i wanted to find out what everyones favorites are......and why?.....this time i want to get some garlic into the ground in the fall......this year we planted them in the early spring...and...we did get one elephant volunteer come up from last year

we are getting a list going for fall plantings and this time i want to get some yummy garlic and not just buy whats offered from the stores to plant....be fun to try something differnt.....we love garlic.....dont like them to hot....sweeter is better

any suggestions?.....if there is already a thread on this.....send it our way

Here in Central NJ I planted for the first time garlic cloves in the fall 2011.

Two weeks ago I harvested most of my garlic and then the rest this week. They are currently curing and I plan on cleaning off the dirt tom or Sat. I will then cure them another week or two depending how they look. Then I will try braiding them (softnecks). I currently have them stored in a brown low box in the kitchen (hubby says in smells of garlic - really you think!? lol...

I have a quick question - Should I replant the garlic in the same location and box or can I plant them in a different box since I like to rotate all my boxes of veg's each year?

I got 18 heads (some are quite small) and made my first garlic braid , but considering how many things I did wrong i'm pleased. Gonna replant much more this fall and should be in great shape next year.

As soon as you can work the ground. Now if you can, but typically in the autumn, just before thanksgiving I would think.

I planted garlic last fall. I don't know what kind it is...just from the local garden place. They seem to have hard necks?? But they're not producing "scapes", so does that mean they're soft necks?? I've searched all over and can't seem to figure it out. I want to harvest if it's time, but soft necks are supposed to "fall over" and these are not. hard necks are supposed to be harvested when the bottom 1/3 to half of the leaves are brown..which these are; but as I said no scapes.....help!!

I read thru the thread and didn't see anything about letting garlic go to flower.....

we left some scapes grow on some of our garlic and it now has what looks like a purple type flower on it......



Thought I read some where that you can plant these....has anyone tried it? or know anything about using the flower part to start garlic seed with?.....I though I read that it takes two years to grow them....but Im not sure how to go about it....

I live in Kansas City and I've read that it's best to plant garlic in mid-October..

Glad this topic has surfaced..... It reminds me that it is almost time to plant my garlic again.  

I noticed over the past week the tips of my garlic are turning brown. This has me concerned. One of two reasons that I can think of are cold weather about a week ago (21F) and weed killer over spray (round up). They were very careful with the weed killer and the cilantro in the same bed is fine. Would it hurt to clip the tips off or would that hurt the plants even more?

John, mine get to looking like that too. Were the garlic sprouted before you went into winter? The could could have something to do with it. The tips of a few leaves look to be the only thing showing yellow so I wouldn't worry about it.

some times I just trim off the unsightly leave parts to make myself feel better.   

In Kansas, I planted garlic last fall...first timer so I read that it should be ready for harvest in June.  I like the thought that garlic can grow all winter when nothing else is going on...maybe making room for more veggies in the fall garden.

 Fall and garlic planting is something to start thinking about.  A lot of places are already sold out of certain varieties.

I have my six biggest heads from my 6/21/14 harvest currently cooling their heels in my wine cellar at 55degF.  That harvest was originally planted 1/1/14 (I was shooting for the winter solstice, 12/21/13 or thereabouts, but I missed).  I planted 36 cloves, and got 36 heads, but most were small because I forgot to amend the beds before planting.

This year I won't make that mistake.

So, again shooting for the solstice (old saying goes plant garlic on the shortest day of the year, and harvest on the longest day of the year), this time with healthy amended beds!

I hope I have 36 cloves in those six heads!  If I have extra, I will plant those as well and see about letting them just stay in the ground...maybe they'll flower or something?  Oh, they are heirloom Red Incheliums (softneck), and here's the pics:
