Invasive alert fennel

According to my latest copy of FINE GARDENING, fennel is on the invasive alert list for CA, HI, VA and WA

Thanks! The puppy is my Rudy Valentine, a snuggly Valentines gift from Ray three Valentines ago. Seemed like a better idea than a shot of the roses I got.

Invasive alert fennel Februa10

We've noticed the stands of renagade fennel in Sonoma Valley. The plants look just like what you'd plant in your garden for production of culinary seed. The don't appear to have the lovely bulbs for salad, etc. We've grown the seed-producing variety, and immediately noticed how readily they reseeded themselves. Unwanted plants found in spring are immediately removed and composted. All seed heads are watched closely and harvested immediately upon full dryness, then the plants are burned. We don't want Oregon overtaken by any more invasive plants. Nonna
