Earthgro Organic Humus
Starting my garden this year and I have been searching high and low to fullfill the five type compost requirement. First four are: Mushroom, Cow, Hen, and Worm castings.
Today at walmart I stumbled across what I hope will be my fifth but I wondered if anyone has used it or knows anything about the quality? 'Earthgro Organic Humus with Manure'
Bag says 80% forest humus and 20% manure. I would simply jump for joy at finding my fifth but... it was like $1.70 for a 40lb bag....

What concerns me is if it is this product:
http://www.scotts.com/smg/products/earthgro/pdf/Earthgro%20Organic%20Humus%20and%20Manure.pdf
...in the fine print it says the humus "is derived from peat, compost, forest products, manure and/or other organic materials" - wondering if that might throw off your peat in your mix?
To the more experienced gardeners - any idea why this says not to plant directly into it but firmly insists you should mix it with soil?

Yep... thats the stuff. It really was literally a $1.70. So if the consensus turns out against it im not really out anything and the search for compost continues.

Re: Earthgro Organic Humus
It says not more than 90% humus. I think it is 90% peat so I'm afraid you have not yet found your fifth compost but on the bright side you have peat. try "freecycle" might be able to find some there or Craigs list.

Re: Earthgro Organic Humus
If you lived in texas, that stuff would be great since it HAS to be 80% compost and 20% manure. Though I don't really care for the company that makes it, so I'd probably have just skipped over it anyway. The problem with most humus-based stuff is that peat makes up some of the content. Because of mixing, you never know how much peat you'll end up with(and they obviously don't know either, or they'd say it), unless you're lucky enough to find Mel's Mix, then you know exactly how much peat you're getting.

I think I will just dump it onto some spot in the yard and semi rake it in. I wont risk my soon to be garden by screwing up the MM.
