Waddup with winter? Empty Waddup with winter?

Post  BackyardBirdGardner 1/5/2012, 8:18 pm

Thought I'd post this here, as opposed to my region, since pretty much the entire United States is going through this lack of snow thing.

How many of you are running above average temps with no snow on the ground? It's enough to make me want to stick something in the ground and get a jump on spring.......in flipping January!

I'm about to lose my mind this year already. You?

Checking in here in Massachusetts. We had a snowfall for Hallowe'en, and then nada since. It's gonna be a tough summer. My staff doesn't love it exactly when I make them save all the unconsumed water from the tables, but that's what I do to help compensate for drought conditions. In 2010 here in Massachusetts it was brutal. I don't love shoveling, and I don't love what snow does to my business, but my little bulbs and stuff wishes there would be some to keep them cozy!

Cabin fever has not set in here at all. Last year at this time I had a wicked case of bursitis from raking the roof every third day and then shoveling more snow. I am just soooo happy that I see light in the Eastern sky before I go to work! The ground is still frozen solid. Spring is coming to our neck of the woods, but it's going to be a while in coming. What a Face
I frequently remind myself, 'Patience Grasshopper." sunny

I remember. Lots of clips of people raking their roofs in your neck of the woods last year....lots of roof failures, too.

Unbelievable. We hit 68 today! Tomorrow we might hit 40 and snow is in the forecast.
When it gets warm like this, the bee's from our neighbors hives swarm all over our chicken feed and scratch grains. There were thousands of bees around here today I swear! I don't really mind. The chickens don't eat their food and there are so many bees you can't really replenish food or waters, but oh well. They usually give us honey in the fall so I guess in a way we helped lol.

No kidding, same here too.

I keep saying I didn't move to Idaho for a brown winter darn it. If I had wanted brown winters I would have stayed in Arizona.

This has been INSANE. We were 42 degrees on Christmas friggin day!

We hit 52 yesterday! I have been thinking I should plant somehting too. Urgh. But I know soon as I do....

Its like spring never ended in 2011. We waited and waited to plant, it was so cold and rainy all the way through June, we had ZERO summer to speak of, now no winter, more spring. It's like the year Spring stayed all year....

Sigh. I am with Camprn, Patience Grasshopper.

It was 59 here yesterday - 2nd day in a row records were broken and reset. The lakes should have 2-3 feet of ice on them right now but what little ice was starting to form is mostly gone now. Only one more month until ice huts have to be removed from lakes, and the fishermen haven't even been able to put them out yet! Getting antsy with bare ground! I wanna plant some seeds!!!!!! WAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

Not a flurry all season here. We've had a couple days that didn't hit 35°, but for the most part it's been 50's and raining every three days, just like autumn. I'm a winter-lover, so I've been sad.

I just hope "winter" doesn't hit in March as I'm getting the peas and lettuce started!

Ditto......we've had only two days of winter so far. 15 and 20 degrees for lows and 37 and 40 for highs, which is cold for us here.

It was 62 yesterday and a forecast of 66 today and 68 tomorrow.........WHOA.....

I'm more worried about my overwintered spinach bolting......GO FIGURE !!!!

No frost in the 5 day forecast.

We did actually hit 0F once here in town, and have had a few days down to the 10-15 range (lows, not highs) - enough to stop the growing season, but that was a MONTH ago! Lawns are getting little green blades poking up. I WANT MY SNOW!!!!! At least when it is white outside I don't have the itch to plant something when it will surely die!

I think today I'll take down my Christmas lights.....in shorts! I've certainly never done that before on January 6th!

Hey Staf, I know you're happy with the winter hoops, but is this year even a decent one to judge by? I keep waiting, in my neck of the woods, for temps to stay down for 3 or 4 days in a row, but they just warm back up.

He he...I just noticed the kids left for school 20 minutes ago and the front door was left open! Another first for January 6th!! Barely a draft in here right now.

Exactly. Not at all. There's been times where I throw the plastic on just because it makes me feel like I'm gardening when in reality i know everything I planted is hardy and is perfectly fine at 32.

That's about all we've had as well, and it was gone the next day. What they call around here an 'open' winter. Not sure it can even be called 'winter'.

Virtually no snow this winter, and I bought new tires AND a new snowthrower this fall... There hasn't even been enough snow to melt to make ice where I need to put salt on the walkways. Remarkable.

Yesterday I washed and waxed my Car! January 6th, and I'm out waxing my car! I was in short sleeves and a felt hat and was actually too warm. In Michigan, it's just nuts to have this kind of warm weather. This is the first year I can remember that if I had just row covered my garden I could have kept the lettuce and cold weather stuff going yet!

Hopefully we get several storms soon dumping a foot or better, or the lakes will be dropping pretty steeply. I think the last storm my area got was in the beginning of November. Since November the only stuff we've gotten is a light drizzle of rain now and again.

Can you return the snowthrower and buy it again next year please? I'd love another mild winter like this!

A high of 44 tomorrow, it's snowed twice all season... and I live in Canada. God bless the great white north. (Never mind that I live further south of a good chunk of the USA - stereotypes just make it seem better than it actually is lol.)
