What I saw at the garden center yesterday
They had a landscaping theme of redbor kale, purple giant mustard, red stemed swiss chard, pansys and snapdragons. Best looking winter foundation garden I've ever seen.

Don"t you need to go back to the nursery and buy your son something for Christmas? And take the camera with you this time!

Will be going back that way for Christmas. Had the camera with me but didn't think about pictures because they had some wrought iron flower stands 40% off and I was buying myself a Christmas present and 2 bags of vermiculite.

This should go in the "You know your SFG when..." thread.

Re: What I saw at the garden center yesterday
OK per Boffer's requested. Vegetables in the flower garden.
ruby swiss chard, rusty snapdragons, and blue pansies (18* weather night before last laid the chard low but didn't knock it out)

redbor kale and yellow pansies around bare crape myrtle tree

lacy ornamental kale and pansies around bush and crape myrtle

redbor kale, white snapdragons and yellow pansies

Kay
PS; all these plants were out in the open, no covers and down to 18* one night and below freezing several nights. But the weather has been exceptionally warm this year.

Re: What I saw at the garden center yesterday
I plan to appropriate the designs into my yard next year. Ordered an extra pack of redbor kale seeds to have available next Aug. Also plan to have an extra pack of the ruby red chard and the giant purple mustard. Pansies and snapdragons I'll see. May get cell packs from Lowes. I love the look and it is holding up well at least for THIS winter.

Re: What I saw at the garden center yesterday
Last year I experimented too long with my beautiful varigated miniature Roses in Flowerboxes. I figgered: they are off the ground, & against the house, & covered well, so they should do okay. Yes,walshevak wrote:OK per Boffer's requested. Vegetables in the flower garden.

But they got a bit too dried-out, & then it got near 28-degrees, & they all died

This year, I experimented with beautiful varigated Winter-pansies, but the same thing happened again.
Maybe because all the Window-boxes are on the North-side

Re: What I saw at the garden center yesterday
LittleGardener,
Flower boxes on the North side of the house, espcially in the PNW, would have very limited sun. Roses need a good bit of sun. I also had problems with miniature roses. Mine were not very hardy and succumbed (this word looks funny, but spell check says it is spelled correctly) to low temperatures too.
I have never grown winter pansies so have no experiences to relate.

Re: What I saw at the garden center yesterday
I had geraniums on the north side of the house on a porch. They got exactly 0 sun although being in CA there was plenty of light. I also almost never watered them. They thrived on the neglect and became my heroes coming back and looking beautiful every spring. Geraniums are the bomb for flower boxes. They are not the choice of Paris window boxes for nothing.

so Glad your wonderful Geraniums are thriving...Chopper wrote:

Also tried to Over-winter mine, they too died.

(Noticed on that North-side, it gets too damp, and things die of the dreaded mold, etc.)
I have 3 much better places where plants might thrive too... I will try in time.
