I Need a Red Cherry Tomato
My grow list is almost complete. All I really need is a cherry tomato. I was thinking that I'd grow sweet million but with all of the other out there, maybe I could get some ideas.

Re: I Need a Red Cherry Tomato
I grew Sugar Cherry last summer and it was sooooo prolific. Small red tomatoes and they just kept coming and coming and wouldn't stop. I'll grow them again this season.
And a larger one that is wine red and very prolific is Black Cherry. The flavor is superb and they are even great roasted and frozen for later. Very prolific and keep coming til frost.
Just a couple you might consider that are highly recommended by a fellow SFGr.

I will support Black Cherries as well. Grew Riesentraub this fall and though first frost will hit tonight without me eaten any ripened ones (will pluck and let sit on kitchen counter), the number of flowers is staggering.

Re: I Need a Red Cherry Tomato
I already have a black cherry on my grow list. As a matter of fact, I should get my tomato seeds sometime this week. All I have to do is order sungold F1, Big Zac, and then a red cherry.
I found a Sugar Cherry on a website and they have a 76 day "maturity" Is that pretty good for a cherry?

Year before last we grew Juliets. Didn't this year and we missed them tremendously. They are a little elongated (sort of like miniature romas), but what we loved about them was they were great fresh on salads or you can roaste and freeze them. We wound up roasting most of ours.
Re: I Need a Red Cherry Tomato
I've seen Juliets at garden centers around me. I never grew them though. Anyway, my grow list is complete. One of the freebies I got from Tatiana's was something called Tomatito de Jalapa....it's a currant-type. So there's no need(or space! LOL) for a cherry tomato.

I grew a Juliet this year in my flower garden because I had no more space in my SFG and its an F1 (hybrid) so I couldn't save any seed. Its larger than a cherry tomato and elongated a bit more than wide. Tasty.

They are larger. I was suprised when Terrie (my wife) told me they were considered a cherry. They sure are good though. Very prolific. We grew them in our greenhouse and off of 4 plants we got barely over 500 tomatoes. We were trying to get away from hybrids, but we missed them so much we are adding them back as we type.
Re: I Need a Red Cherry Tomato
I grew Juliet my first year doing SFG. Went to heirlooms the second year (last spring), but picked up a Juliet start for my fall garden...that first year I took a sucker inside when the weather got too hot, babied it indoors and replanted it in the fall for more tomatoes. It was the best producer for me.

Elliephant, I am intrigued! Tell me more about bringing the sucker and having it be successful!

Re: I Need a Red Cherry Tomato
I just brought one in and stuck it in a mason jar of water in a windowsill. Once it had a lot of roots I planted it in a self-watering pot and left it in the same windowsill for a couple of months until the temperatures were starting to get a bit more reasonable. Then I transplanted it back into the garden. Of course I have a very long growing season, so that's just what worked for me here.

Re: I Need a Red Cherry Tomato
Well, my guys are long gone here in New England, but especially if I do get my (unheated) greenhouse in the spring, I will probably just have to try it!
