Below is a list of herbs I'd like to grow for an herb garden. They're divided by the seasons they prefer to be grown in

Cool (fall, spring)

1.Borage
2.Chervil

3.Chives
4.Cilantro
5.Fennel
6.Mint
7.Parsley
8.Dill


Hot (summer)

1.Basil
2.Oregano
3.Rosemary
4.Lavender
5.Cumin
6.Sage
7.Thyme



The main questions I have is of the herbs listed, which are difficult to start from seed? Which are slow and difficult to germinate? Which require light for germination, and should be grown shallowly with the the soil depth?
With the herbs that are difficult and slow to germinate, how can I make them germinate faster?


I have some questions about the cumin, lavender and rosemary. The cumin, I'd be growing it for the seeds, so would it take longer to grow, more than a year? I know it's listed as an annual, however I'm wondering if it would take longer since I'm growing for the seed of it.


Lavender and rosemary, they like lots of sun, hate wet feet, and prefer a dry soil. Yet with growing in southern climates, they tend to be more difficult to grow; I'm confused about this because don't southern climates have the conditions they'd love and thrive with growing them?

I am a new SFG gardener, but I can tell you what grew well, and what did not for me.

I grew basil, cilantro, oregano, chives, dill and lavender from seed, and mint and rosemary from seedling transfers.

The basil, oregano, and chives did very well in both the hot and cool seasons. I lost the basil with the first frost, but the oregano and chives are still thriving.

The cilantro and dill grew very well during the cool season, but went to seed during the hot season.

Although I tried to germinate rosemary, I was unsuccessful. However, I had great luck with a purchased seedling. It grew to be a bushy 3' plant. The mint seedlings grown in their own pots (I fear their invasiveness nature) did well and provided plenty to harvest.
