I've had the "New" SFG book for a couple of years now but haven't really "started" a garden yet. No time Sad

However, I did use ideas from the book to design garden beds for my DH's mom! Smile She's getting up there in years so needed something "table height" to work with. She loves the beds and has gotten alot of good veggies out of them!

I really look forward to being able to get our own personal "SFG" beds started. We're going to use cinder blocks for our beds and DH has finally let me start "accumulating" them! I think I've finally gotten him more interested in the whole concept of SFG. He's only experienced "row" gardening. Hopefully by next spring we can get things going!

I look forward to learning alot from reading the forums (which I found a couple days ago). I've already spent hours pouring over the newest posts and will be digging deeper to read the older posts, as time permits.

Hiya from Central AR 396615 Carol! I'm so glad you've decided to join us! I think you'll love sfg as opposed to row gardening! Hopefully, your husband will see the light when he no longer has to pull weeds (hardly ever) from a sfg.

I just yesterday had a discussion with a friend who's done row gardening all his life. I asked him if he'd planted a fall garden and he said no, he'd given up on gardening because he just couldn't keep up with the weeding. Naturally, I shared my experiences with sfgs and very little weeding. I think he's so over gardening right now because of the weeds that he's not going to rush right out and build a sfg, but I hope if he gets the itch to garden again, he'll think of what I said about sfgs.

Please keep up informed as to how your gardening efforts go, we'd love to hear. And you can get all kinds of help here as you need it. I hope to see you post often with questions, comments and updates on your own efforts!

Wow! Thanks for the warm welcome!

SFG is something I've wanted to do for years. Unfortunately we are truck drivers so we are never home to take care of a garden.

I noticed in the "Regional" section a few people posting from central ar so thought I should join up! I have purchased oodles of heirloom seeds from the heirloom seed shop in Norfork Ar in the past so that I can have a "sustainable" garden and won't have to order seeds every year, although I have the feeling that it may take a couple years of gardening before I can do that at any reasonable level, since I have extremely limited gardening experience to begin with.

Anyway!! Gonna sign off for now before I write a whole biography!! lol

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

I'm sure that being home infrequently makes it difficult to have a garden. Have you considered taking your garden with you?

This RV'er did. It might not be feasible for a pro on the road, but it might get you thinkin'!

I think the trick for you is to set up an automatic watering system. If you can do that then your long absences should not be a big problem.

Boffer, trust me, if we could do SFG on the road I would! That RV set up is pretty neat Smile

Chopper, I've attempted gardening while on the road by using timers, etc. a couple of times. Problem is, there are so many different bugs where we live they decemated my garden. The only thing I got from my experiment was some basil. I suppose I could try plants that don't need insect pollination and put covers on them. Never really thought about that.

At this point though, spring will be the soonest I could do anything, and we're hoping that by then we can get home on a more regular basis, instead of for a week every three months or so. We're doing our best to become as debt free as possible atm and it's going pretty good, as long as we continue to sacrafice home time.

Again, thanks all for the warm welcome!

p.s. Chopper, where do you get your labels at? I saw one you showed on one of your garden pics and really like that you can get so much info on it!

I just bought them at Home Depot - if not there, Lowes. I spray painted them green but if I had it to do over again I would just keep them white and find a wax pencil somewhere (where do you get those?) They are a nice size tho.
