My 'portable' SFG

I spent a few hours this weekend in the garage and this is what i came
up with for a 'portable' SFG.... I wanted something that I could move
throughout my yard and also wanted to be able to move it into the garage
this winter when/if we get any frosty weather. The 10" pneumatic
castors are from Harbor Freight, I was planning on going with the 8"
size but the 10" were on sale for the same price as the 8", so I figured the bigger the wheel the
easier to push through thick grass. The outside case is 2x12", however
the actual depth of the MM is only 8" or so. I laid 2x4's flat around
the inside of the case and that's what the 3/4" plywood is mounted too,
as well as the 4"x4" legs. I underestimated the amount of strength
needed for the connection of the legs to the box, I originally had the
leg mounted to the 2x4 frame with four 3.5" decking screws and one 1/4" x
5" lag screw, however on the maiden voyage to the back yard, loaded
with all the MM ingredients one of the legs busted off, the decking
screws snapped in half and the lag screw pulled all the way through the
2x4! So back to Home Depot I went for a bunch more of the 5" lag
screws, as well as 1/4" and 3/8" washers to prevent the head from
pulling through the 2x4. Each leg is also supported externally with 6 L
brackets which connect the leg to the 2x12" box. Thankfully, it seems
to be plenty strong now and I was able to wheel it with no problems...
So far I just have 2 pepper plants, I just transplanted those a few minutes before I took this photo.



I also have a trellised SFG that I posted a photo of a while back... Here it is again with the trellis and some cukes and toms

If you are going to have peas on one side, you'll need a trellis for them. They can grow over 6 ft tall.

I like the idea of being able to push that garden wherever the sun dictates or not and in bad weather, inside the garage. Good thinking. I hope it works for you.

Thanks quilt! You actually answered one of my lingering questions about the peas, I wasn't sure how tall they would get... I do plan on putting a trellis on this, I was hoping I could get away with only 4 feet ball but sounds like that would be a bad idea.... Looks like I'll have to break out step ladder to harvest peas off a taller trellis.

Has anyone tried the "dwarf" sugar snap peas. THINK that's what I had this spring. What ever I had, they only got about 4 ft tall, but I'm not home to check the envelope.

TT's RULE at my house.

I really like the fact that one person can roll yours from spot to spot, or from the yard to the garage. Very glad you got the leg strengthened. That must have been disheartening when screws failed. My TT's are pretty darn heavy and I think we will need a football team to move them. I will need to move one at the end of the season.

TT's rule at my house too. I love your wheels. Can you make one for me with dune buggy ballon wheels so I can push it through my sandy yard? Well I have no shelter to wheel it to any way. No kidding, your TT is realy, realy cool.
