potatoes
I just dug up my potatoes. I got 1 big one and about 9 smaller ones and a dozen quail egg size plus mini ones. They are red potatoes and I had 10 plants. I am in the okanagan, can I plant another crop now? And can I use the mini (smaller than pinky finger nail) potatoes as seeds? If so how, just drop them in the soil or do I have to wait for sprouts?
thanks, Kari

BackyardBirdGardener and I are trying potatoes that we just planted last week, with no idea whether we will get any results or not. I have looked at several sites and they say to plant potatoes from mid March thru June. That means we have planted at least six weeks after the last recommended date.
Again, no wisdom, just an experiment we are trying on our own.
Do you know if your potatoes were early, mid season or late season type? Had your leaves and stems turned brown and died back? For such a small harvest from 10 plants, perhaps you harvested them a bit too early.
As to whether the minis will produce, especially this late in the year, I don't know, because I used seed potatoes with lots of sprouts.

Re: potatoes
Sounds like another opportunity to experiment if you ask me. Not that you did..
I would try about anything from storing them and planting when they sprout to just sticking them back in the ground and watching what happens. Of course, I would only do this with what I wasn't ever going to eat. Experimentation is how we learn what is possible.

Re: potatoes
I called a potato farm this morning to ask about the condition of my seed potatoes. She gave me a lot of helpful information. One thing she did mention was that potatoes need 2 months of dormancy before they are replanted. She said they need 40 degree temps in a non humid place.
Hope this helps!
