Are Kentucky Wonder beans supposed to be flat?
I kept waiting for these things to plump up, but they're just growing longer and tougher so I figured I better start picking them. The bushes are being massacred by Japenese beetles anyway.
I might be remembering Blue Lake green beans when I think about nice grocery-store looking green beans.
I don't really love the look of these Kentucky Wonders. If Blue Lakes are plump and green-beany, I think I'll order those seeds next time.

None of mine have been flat. I have grown both the KW and blue lake which are quite similar as pole beans. Then they married them into the blue wonder which has been my main crop pole beans most years. The only flat bean I have grown is called Romano an Italian variety that is flat wide and a little lighter color it also has a stronger bean flavor.

Huh. Well that's really weird. I'll have to take a picture of these. I mean, they're not paper flat, but they definitely aren't cylindrical.
Then again, my bean leaves went thru a long yellow stage in the beginning. Maybe they got messed up.

If I pick my Kentucky Wonder runner beans when they are small they are round. If the beans are left on the vine and are getting mature, they become flatter than they were earlier.

Oh! Maybe that's it. I don't know tho. Even the small ones are flat.

I was looking for an existing topic on Kentucky Wonder beans and saw this topic. Mine are getting to be 2-3" and they are rather flat. The seeds bulge out in spots.

My Kentucky Wonder beans (bush) ended up being flat. Several remained on the bush because they were forgotten. The tender new beans tended to be more rounded.NHGardener wrote:Wow Sanderson, that's an old post! lol.

My Kentucky Wonders also tend to be flat, and the seeds bulge. At first, thought they might actually be Romanos.

My neighbor grew them better than I did last year, and picked them later. His beans really started to bulge out of their pods after a while, but mine were somewhere between flattish around the beans and still the same size as the beans when I picked them. But they were never as flat as snow peas.
