My particular flavour of Square Foot Gardening is the tabletop container variety. My first two boxes are 6" deep. I have plans drawn up for other gardens that are 8" deep and 12" deep, and also for adding 12" x 12" layered towers that I can stack as needed for specific crops within any depth of container.

My question is, is there anything I cannot grow in a container garden? I'm thinking that by layering individual squares I could potentially grow anything, even potatoes.

Most veggies will grow well in 6 inches of MM. You do need deeper mix for carrots, parsnips and other long root vegetables. Some members have grown potatoes successfully in 6 inches of MM, just make sure any potatoes that rise abouve the surface of the soil are covered again in MM to avoid the skin of the potato from turning green. Green skin on potatoes, caused by the sun hitting the actual potato, can cause stomach upset.

I would have second thoughts about trying to grow space hog type veggies in a SFG. Examples might be artichokes which take up about 9 sq feet, a full 3 X 3 for one plant.

You can potentially grow anything, I'm pretty sure. I'm growing some very short carrots this year with no issues and no need to add extra depth for them. I plan on doing potatoes next year, by adding an empty wooden box on top of the squares the potatoes are in and layering leaf mulch on top as they grow taller (so I don't have to make more MM). I've been growing zucchini in the 4 squares of the corners of my boxes and letting the plants reach out over the edge onto the ground. They're so hardy and prickly that nothing bothers them when they're laying on the grass a little.

I've even heard of planting things like raspberry and blueberry bushes in your SFG, but that seems like a bit of a waste to me because they're a permanent crop that takes up a ton of space (I think they use something like four squares, and you need to plant them in a long 2 square wide box).

I can't think of anything else off the top of my head, but I bet if you wanted to grow it, you could make it work!

check out the book:

The Vegetable Gardener's Container Bible

General consensus is that you can grow just about anything in a container.

What can't I grow in my containers? Empty Varieties?

Post  hankyknot 8/7/2011, 11:37 am

That's excellent news, are there any specific varieties that I need to look out for or key words when choosing seeds?
