Sounds almost romantic, doesn't it?

Last several days has been terribly windy -- up to 50 mph gusts. And I really needed to finish filling the last bed, but no way to make Mel's mix in those kinds of winds. Wind finally died down around 9 last evening, and with an almost full moon... Well, there I was mixing Mel's mix by moonlight. Mel's Mix by moonlight Icon_smile It worked and the last bed is finally done. Now to finish cool season planting and get in another 2 squares of beans, and plant more tomatoes, peppers, and, and, and....

Mel's Mix by moonlight Empty Moonflowers

HAha wow I'd be saving that batch of mix for moonflower beds and other night bloomers... and of course my kids would insist on watering with "moonwater" too haha.

Mel's Mix by moonlight Empty Re: Mel's Mix by moonlight

Post  Kabaju42 3/28/2010, 7:06 pm

I tried doing something like that. A couple of days ago I started making my Mel's mix. It was my first time making it, and I was trying to make it in a wheelbarrow. I started by putting the peat moss and vermiculite in there, but I put too much of just those two in and it overfilled the wheelbarrow forcing me to find some plastic to put it on. Then I put the compost in my wheelbarrow (again too much) and started diluting it with the peat/vermiculite mix one bucket at a time. By that time it was late and there wasn't much light to see the color of the mix (to compare the black of my compost to the brown of the peat) but there was enough to make the vermiculite all sparkly. I kept thinking to myself, "wow I must by using too much vermiculite. But I still haven't put in enough."

The next day the mix looked great though.

I just wanted to get my garden done and planted. You can see from my thread in the showcase form that I've been at this for a long time.

Or perhaps it's only for veggies that are supposed to be planted by the light of the moon? Send your kids over -- the best garden I ever had was one in which the ranch hands "watered" it regularly. Sure do miss those ranch hands.
