Cuts in squash stems - borers?
I planted some squash a few weeks ago, quite late in the season (hoping to outwit the borers, ha!). Anway, one of my new little plants has some slices or cuts in the stem. Might this be evidence of borers? I hate to try surgery on something so tiny, maybe half inch in diameter. If you say it's evidence of uneven watering, well, I'd have to plead guilty as charged.
For full disclosure, this is not in my SFG box but it is planted in a top dressing of Mel's mix!

Yes, they are clean, no frass -- sorry for the blurry photo. No macro capability and I got too close.
What could cause the splitting? Thanks!
