Radishes and Squash Vine Borers
I'm working on spacing plans for my new SFG. Squash is one of my favorite vegies. Attempts to grow summer squash and zucchini have always started well... until the pesky squash vine borers appeared. I've tried wrapping the stems in foil and pantyhose. I've cut the bottoms off of Solo cups and placed them over the plants. The borer wins every time. I really don't want to use Sevin on the plants. I recently read that planting radishes around squash deters the borer. I also read that planting French Marigolds nearby deters squash bugs. Has anyone tried these?

Re: Radishes and Squash Vine Borers
I have also read that Dwarf French Marigolds planted around the outside of a squash bed will deter Squash Bugs but not the Squash Vine Borer but I have not tried it. I have not heard about the radish deterring the Squash Vine Borer. I use insecticidal soap for the squash bugs. Here is an article written by one of our members talking about the Dwarf French Marigolds and how they keep squash bugs out of his garden. About halfway down this page he also talks about hand pollinating the squash blossoms.

I have tried to plant squash real early and harvest before the Squash Vine Borers show up, or plant real late after the Squash Vine Borers have left the garden in the fall. But here in Georgia the Squash Vine Borer season is real long so this will not work for long. .But the only thing that seems to work for me is to cover the bed with row cover (I use tulle) and hand pollinate or use parthenocarpic varieties.

Thanks, Yolos, for sharing the article! It's very informative. I had not thought of covering and hand pollinating.
