Looks like it is about time to start those Fall Plantings and we haven’t had Summer yet!

Locally, there are few Fall Transplants available, so I am already behind.

Table Tops and 5 gallon bucket tomatoes look pretty good.

My broccoli and cauliflower have finally finished. It was not a good year for big broccoli heads, but the cauliflower harvest was wonderful. I can't believe Deb is eating her cabbage already; mine are just now starting to head.

A box of carrots that will last us till March, stored right where they are.

His brother that had to live outside.

A trellis for short people. If you have a hoop house, cover it with trellis netting or chicken wire, add a small box on the north side, and you have a trellis.
JULY 2011 in the PNW Dscn0713

These are peas. They just naturally lay on the trellis as they reach for the sun.

I have the same peas on another trellis that are pushing 8 feet tall, are out of reach, and are starting to fall over and break.

The planting guide came from MotherEarth News. I know the dates might be different in various areas of our region, but at least it is something to start with.
That is a Sweet Banana Pepper turning color. I plan to add it to our pasta salad or a stir fry tonight. We will be gone for about ten days and I need to harvest what I can in the next day or two.
Our middle son is getting married just outside of DC so we get to take in some heat and humidity for a while. What a Face

This Green Globe artichoke plant came back from last year, some varieties are hardy down to zone 6 or 7, so in my area they are perrenials. I did start some seeds back in February, but did not get them planted outside soon enough and they putzed on me. All my fault. Sad Boffer and Lavender Debs both grow artichokes too.

I still have one broccoli head and a few shoots, then I will pull the last of the broccoli and put in some bush beans. My cabbage is barely starting to head, but the Grow UR Grub Children's garden and one of my neighbors have both harvested at least one beautiful cabbage head each.

Sigh, I also found my first slug in a Table Top. Sad Splat, into a pail of water he went.

Furb i meant to ask you what kind of lettuce is the red one you have shown above?....it looks so yummy and so pretty....i want some of that in my salads Very Happy

boffer your table top hoop houses are awesome!......im pleading with my hubby to put my two 4x4 SFG on legs next year....what level do you think we should put them at?.....like at hip level?.....do you need to use a ladder to harvest?....i want them high enough so that i do not have to bend or stoop.....my back is in awful shape and im paying for it again this summer getting down on my hands and knees.....i just dont think i can do it again next summer.....my hubby and kids help me out a lot.....so they can do it....

the garden though i LOVE to do....i want my hands dirty....i want to plant and water and say hello to them each morning.....so if i could get my 2 4x4 tables on legs...it would be awesome!

The red lettuce is called Revolution and I got it from Territorial Seeds. Besides its deep red color, the leaves are very ruffly so they look really good in salads. They are sweet and mild.

I don't know how tall Boffer's Table Tops are, but my Table Tops are at hip height, the top is about 28 inches. (I have short legs too tongue ) Very little bending necessary.

I recommend starting with your kitchen counter tops as a reference. Do you wish they were higher or lower to fit your size? Go from there. In the U.S., 36 inches nominal has been considered standard kitchen counter top height for decades.

Most of my boxes are 36 inches. My carrot box is 42 inches, and I really like it. I made a couple boxes 28-30 inches for planting broc, cauli, cabbage, and bs. They are OK but 36 would have worked too.

Just the way my gardens and interests have evolved, the majority of my cool crops are in tabletops, and the majority of my warm season crops are in boxes on the ground; the obvious exceptions being peas and tomatoes. I like trellising tomatoes on the hoops, but it would be easier done if the box was on the ground.

I'll bet I would be even more comfortable with 36 inches, now that I try reaching across my Kitchen Island which is also counter top height. The 28 inches works OK for me, but I still have to do a little bit of bending at the waist.

The only concern is that I can barely reach to the 7 foot trellis for my peas, and need a sturdy single step stool to reach the top if I build an 8 foot trellis. With a 36 inch base, I would have either 4 feet or 5 feet for the plants to grow up.

Maybe I will build my new H3's at 36 inches.
