Thanks!! tongue

I keep getting BER on my romas and today on some of the Lemon Boys. I'm going to hit them with some calcium spray that I hope will resolve that little issue soon. Hate tossing out good toms! Mad

Love seeing the Lemon Boys. I picked up three sad little Lemon Boy plants on clearance a week or two ago. Wasn't sure how I'd like them, but wanted to try some yellow and orange tomatoes. Do you mostly eat them fresh, preserve, or cook with them?

What's BER?

I'm with the rest of you... seeing some small green tomatoes, but still have a little while to wait.

BER = Blossom End Rot. I think it's caused by a lack of calcium in the soil based on what I have read. You may have seen it on toms, peppers and squash. Black or brown sunken ends of the fruit opposite the stems. Tragic--they were only babies!! Sad

You pull them off, fix the soil and move on.

The lemon boys are really nice--very mild and flavorful. We're going to try them tonight with some cheese, basil, olive oil and salt. Make a salad of out it.

For the record, one other lesson I have learned in 2 years of SFG'ing. Toms do not grow well in plastic containers. They do much better in raised beds. I keep getting BER in the plants in the plastic containers, but my 2 bushes in my raised beds are doing okay so far. Who knew? Smile

Thanks. I've heard of Blossom End Rot, but didn't recognize the acronym and would never have recognized it. I had imagined it quite literally as blossoms rotting. Thanks for explaining. And thanks for the tip on the plastic containers. Maybe I'll just put these guys straight in one of my landscape beds. Nothing like MM, but I just don't have the space in my squares.

I hope mine are too! They're still a little rough from sitting around so long at the greenhouse and I'm hoping they'll perk up soon.

My experience with Lemon Boys is that they are tough fighters - anything in my garden has to be!

Today's tomato harvest. Empty BER issue

Post  SQFTBIX 7/15/2011, 12:23 pm

BER can also be caused by excessive water either by rain or rain and watering. You may want to cut back on watering or limit it to a cup each time. I know in our area, we have gotten quite a bit of rain. Next year, if this persists this year, you can work in some vegetable lime in the hole where you are planting your tomatoes. That's what I did this year as I had similar results like yours last year. So far, I don't have any BER. Very Happy
