oh, so you can eat that?
We have owned our house for 1.5 years and with it came a section of rhubarb (probably about 5-6 plants, bulbs...whatever you would call it). I don't know how long it has been there, but it produces like crazy. Here is what I got out of the space today:
I am completely clueless about rhubarb (I didn't even know what rhubarb was until I was in high school ). First of all, is this ripe? Secondly, what the heck do I do with it? I just cleared it out today because it was shading our neighbor's flowers.
Thanks for any advice/links/suggestions you can send my way.

I don't know if it is ripe or not, but you can make rhubarb pie, just heard of it, but don't know if it is good tasting.

Re: oh, so you can eat that?
We had some growing when I was a kid, came with the house too. Ours was much redder in color but perhaps there are different varieties? You can make jam too.
I thought I'd share this because I think the way this google tool
works is relatively new and I just realized not that long ago that they made
it easier to search for recipes. :o) I like to do to find recipes using google, search an ingredient and on the left hand side of the screen click recipes. After you see what kinds of things show up you can add ingredients that you already have by using the left hand side of the screen which shows suggestions. I've found a lot of great things to try. When picking a recipe my favorite sites to look at for best bets to work out have been All Recipes, epicurean (which is a catalog of recipes from fancy magazines), and food network.
Good luck and enjoy your rhubarb! It's the kind of thing that will just keep popping up with no work at all. At least that was our experience :o)

I love, love, LOVE rhubarb pie, no strawberries. Yum, yum, yum.....
A lot of people prefer strawberry-rhubarb pie, but my personal opinion is that if they had plain old rhubarb pie the way my Grandma used to make it, they would never look back!

It is yummy. With or without strawberries. Pie, cobbler, (raw and stolen out of the neighbor's garden if you are a kid), I will take it any way I can get it.

Re: oh, so you can eat that?
I just found out a few years ago that strawberry-rhubarb pie really had strawberries! I always thought that the rhubarb with the red on it was called strawberry-rhubarb. The variety we grew in our yard when I was a kid was all green and I had never seen the red stuff until I was an adult.

Thanks everyone! I think I'm going to freeze most of it for dessert at a later time. The rest of it will make Rhubarb Soda...and some Ruby Junes.

Re: oh, so you can eat that?
I have rhubarb growing in my flower beds. It's not really very red, either. It looks like yours, actually. As long as it's at least 1/2 inch thick, I pick it. We cut it up and freeze it. Then my husband makes a heavenly rhubarb custard pie. When the rhubarb thaws, all that juice gets mixed in with the custard. YUMMY!! Never had rhubarb till I met him, and this is my favorite way of eating it. He also stews it and we eat it over french vanilla ice cream. Never made jam, but hear it's great. Maybe we'll try that this year.

We used to sneak out side with the sugar bowl and then find grandmas rhubard . If the rhubard was still tart we would dip it into the sugar bowl. (Kind of like dip-n-stiks candy.) Ahhh the memories!!

I had forgotten about doing that when I was a kid... there was a guy whose property backed up to a park and we would go and pick his rhubarb plants and then run home and stick-em in the sugar bowl and chow down... Mom always wondered where the sugar went!
Good times!

No, no, no. Don't listen to anyone above me. Rhubarb is terrible. In fact, it's so bad you should just send it all to me, so I can dispose of it properly.

Rhubarb Crumble with custard is my favourite but a close second is an Apple and Rhubarb tart/pie.
But if you are having lovely hot weather and can afford to splash out on a sparkling wine -or Lambrini if you aren't feeling flush there's Rhubarb Bellini

That looks lovely rhubarb.
