Hi from another Texan
Hi - Connie here from NW San Antonio. New to TX and new to gardening. This year will be my first attempt at gardening, and I love the idea of SFG. I borrowed the book from the library and have since ordered a copy to keep.
Prior to reading the SFG book, I installed "grow boxes" from Gardener's Supply - one 3' x 6' and one 3' x 18". We live on rock instead of soil so I knew I needed to grow up instead of digging down. I filled my boxes with a "Light Garden Mix" from a local garden supply company (recommended by a Master Gardener I took an adult ed class with.) Hopefully it will be similar enough to Mel's Mix to be successful, since I've already filled my boxes.
I'm planning to start with tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet peppers, bush beans, cantaloupe, etc in my larger bed. I will be using the smaller bed for strawberries (I think - not 100% decided yet. Saw a super cool method of growing strawberries vertically using a canvas shoe hang bag at the stock show that I might try...)
Can't wait to get growing!

Hi Connie,
Welcome and good luck with your SFG. It is SOOOOO much easier than gardening "in the ground". Like the idea of a shoe hanger for growing strawberries. How'd they keep them from drying out? I started a 3' x 3' section of strawberries at the end of my longest raised bed last year. Found out real quick that if I didn't cover them the birds would get them long before I did.

WooHoo San Antonio!
Don't forget the pics of your strawberry plan! I'm in San Antonio as well. We just moved here, and I heard last summer was pretty hot. Hopefully it won't be to bad this year. I have one 4X4 built, but plan on building a few more.
