I have bark mulch between my boxes. I have found some little slugs in my garden the last few days. Not a lot of damage at all just a leaf here or there. But I don't want it to become a problem. I have tried the beer method with no luck. If I bought sluggo and sprinkled it in my bark mulch would that do it or would I have to sprinkle it on my plants? I have found the slugs in the bark mulch on the undersides of some of the pieces so I know they are in the mulch.

These slugs are very little from a 1/4 of an inch to an inch max. They are tan/light brown.

Thoughts everyone?

I just started using Sluggo myself but not long enough to give it a thumbs up or not. I hate those little slugs too. I switched from Ortho Slug and Snail bait Plus to Sluggo.

The Master Gardener at our Community Garden recommend Sluggo around the garden bed and coarse sand around each plant.
Sluggo is considered safer for kids, pets and veggies. I don't feel the coarse sand would be a good addition to MM.

Furbalsmom....do you think if I put it in the wood mulch it would be effective? What if I put it on something and set it under the plants? So they could eat it but it wouldn't be in my Mel's Mix?

What do you think?

I would put Sluggo Brand around the beds, so that would be on your mulch.

Sluggo Brand is organic and non poisonous to humans and pets, so I would not be concerned about it getting in the MM. The active ingredient is iron phosphate and any that is not eaten by the slugs biodegrades into the soil or MM. If you really don't want it in the MM, you could put it on something shallow, but probably would want to surround the stem of the plant. So far I have not been able to think of anything specific that would surround the plant and still have a barrier between your MM and the Sluggo brand.

Some slug and snail control products are not as safe, so personally, I would only use Sluggo Brand.

Thanks FB.

I looked it up before I posted and found conflicting info...so I wasn't sure what to believe. Sluggo reports that it is safe and other groups say it isn't. Slugs and Sluggo 601593

I don't have mulch in my boxes, I have it on the ground between my boxes and I have found the little boogers hiding there...so that was why I was thinking of spreading it there instead of on top of my MM. I think I will just try it.

I really think with as small as my problem is, a little will go a long way. I have tried the beer thing and it doesn't work. I just can't go out on slug patrol at night and squish them....so I needed an alternative.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

Jennie,

There is another Sluggo product called SluggoPlus. It contains Spinosad which is organic, but quite toxic. That is where the conflicting info comes from.

Just stick with regular old Sluggo and you are ok.

Thanks, Dizzy, I did not know they were different products with different ingredients. I just knew the MG said SLUGGO brand.
