Hyzleyes, the "edit" feature is apparently timed. Most forums I've run across let you edit your posts for an unliimited amount of time. Here, it's about an hour. If you can't get back in that timeframe, just repost underneath it and roll with it. That's what I've forced myself to do multiple times.

Glad you got it figured out. And, glad our toms are taking off. It's neat to see us all participating.

Well, my tomatoes are just hanging out; the initial blooms dried up and fell off and the bottom leaves on the 'Yellow Pear' are yellowing! Of course, we have had waayyyyyyyy too much rain and cool temps lately! I continue to have blooms and it looks like they are starting to set fruit, but we will see.........

On another tomato topic; anyone have any info on 'Nicki Crane' toms? Not sure I have the proper spelling. I have seeds coming to me from a patient at work and would like to know more about this variety.

I know it's "Nicky Crain" and that they're heart-shaped, but that's about it. Let us know if you find out anything interesting!

Here is what I found out; they are an heirloom variety, indeterminate, with consistently shaped fruit for heart-shaped tomatoes. Excellent flavor, pink in color. Can't wait to get some from my patient and save some seeds for next year!

If your temps spike, you will notice. Hopefully, the rootballs are ready to really pop some leafy greenness.

Here are mine....just a quick snap. Not much changed from last week to this one.

Tomato Tuesday Thread (N&C Midwest).. - Page 5 5880449629_84c3bd8250

What you can see, though, is the missing pepper plants in the front row. And, you will notice one crazy cucumber growing like it's on steroids. The cuke is to the top of the trellis as of this morning, and the trellis is 8 feet high.

This is the Ananas Noire that is in the backyard. It is still my best performer. We're really excited about all of the babies! The bottom leaves are still curled, but the plant seems healthy & happy. I took of some of the lower leaves the other night - they had pin-sized holes. Sorry that only the stem is in focus.

Tomato Tuesday Thread (N&C Midwest).. - Page 5 20110626

The plants down at the garden all seem to be growing very well. There are only a few babies so far. I don't think I can get pictures tonight. Hopefully I will have some for next week! Smile

No big updates here this week either. Established plants are growing, tomatoes are growing. Seeing more blossoms and baby tomatoes on the established plants. No noticeable growth on my newer plants (Lemon Boys, Kentucky Beefsteak, Yellow Pear, Roman Candle.)

No real updates for me either, unless you count that the deer have finally put in an appearance and ate my largest tomato, and I think the terminal shoot off one of my Romas, and several other branches off the other ones. O.o I had sprayed some repellent but I guess all the rain washed it away...today I didn't spray so much as dump. Wink

I started building a trellis for my Romas today...by next week I'll have that done and hopefully some sort of cheap support for my indeterminates, so I'll have some interesting pics then!

GG

Update on the 'maters - the pics I posted Tuesday were actually taken on Sunday. It has been in the 80's and 90's since Monday and all of my tomatoes are already at least 3" taller - and it is supposed to be 80's and 90's through Monday! I will water them well before I go out of town tomorrow, then there are 2 storms supposedly on the way - I may have corn AND tomatoes knee-high by the 4th of July!

Picked the seasons first tomato for dinner tonight it was a tennis ball sized red zebra. Since it was still green I had to make fried green tomato from it but could wait no longer to start eating them. So as not to waste the excess egg and seasoned coating flour they were mixed together like a thinner noodle dough which I called my poor mans German spaetzle. Fried it in the same skillet while the toms were cooling and together had a fine combination of fried vegetable with a pasta dish. Waste not want not seemed an appropriate caption for that tasty meal.

I can't believe that I missed TWO tomato Tuesdays in a row. No new pics because not a lot of progress. First set fruits had BER, so working on the second round now. Not even a blush of ripening, but lots of fruit. Some will be cat-faced b/c of the crazy weather but still tasty, I am sure.

Speaking of which, I gotta go water. I checked in here while I was waiting for it to get light and got distracted!

FYI, this time of year I just water every morning. It's just a habit since you can't overwater and most of our setting fruits like peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers need CONSISTENT moisture. Same time of day, same basic amounts. Just make it a habit.

If it gets wicked hot, I also go out in late afternoon and give them another drink. 90°+

I have about 4 like this and about another dozen about the size of grapes on 2 beefsteak plants right now. Grapes and cherries finally coming along, too.

*sigh* I know BBG, but I have literally lost an entire WEEK somewhere. I would have sworn that it was just this past Sunday when it was rainy and 69 here, not the week before. I guess with the holiday I at least have somewhat of an excuse for thinking it was Tuesday all day. Tomato Tuesday Thread (N&C Midwest).. - Page 5 615992 Thanks for the "nudge."

Yah I missed two weeks in a row too...w/ the holiday and all it's not surprising.

Anyway my tomatoes are going nuts; it's great because they're setting tons of fruit but they start to look less attractive when they go all crazy so that's a down side, lol. Here are some pics:

Is this what they call Leaf Spot on my Romas? I guess I should spray them with the organic everything-cide I have?Tomato Tuesday Thread (N&C Midwest).. - Page 5 IMG_2180

A zoomed-out view of the Romas...you can see what I mean about them going crazy and not looking as attractive as before. Razz Tomato Tuesday Thread (N&C Midwest).. - Page 5 IMG_2177

That's about it...all my indeterminates are doing great too, except that they're way overdue to be trellised and I haven't had the time to do it yet. :/

I'm a few weeks off, too. I've had a lot of trouble getting the pictures from my phone to my computer. Grrr... But things are growing great! I've decided the plant in the backyard isn't an Ananas Noire after all - it's a Riesentraube. The grape-like clusters are so fun!

Tomato Tuesday Thread (N&C Midwest).. - Page 5 20110710

Tomato Tuesday Thread (N&C Midwest).. - Page 5 20110711

There are 3-4 more clusters in various stages of growth. They aren't doing much in the heat we've had recently, but it's supposed to be cooler the next few days. Maybe we'll get some color changes! I talk to them every day, so they know how excited I am to try them.

Down at the community garden we have a mixed bag. The 5 tomato plants in Kid's Bed #2 aren't fruiting at all. No flowers or anything. I think it is going to get a yummy foliar spray this weekend. What's weird is some of the marigolds are taller than the tomatoes. I've never had tall marigolds before! (Unless it's a weed - I'll have to look closer.)

The plants in the Summer bed have fruit, but only a few. At least they have something!

Tomato Tuesday Thread (N&C Midwest).. - Page 5 20110714

Tomato Tuesday Thread (N&C Midwest).. - Page 5 20110715

The white flowers are the cilantro that has been hiding in the middle. Oops. I'll try to cut it back and see if I can still get something from it.

Nancy, I'm glad to see your photos since you live in the Cincinnati-area also! I've been looking at "green tomatoes" for a while wondering if something was wrong since none of them have turned red, but I guess it's OK. I have fruit on all of my tomato plants now: Yellow Pear, Cherry, Cherokee Purple, San Marzano, Celebrity, Totem, and Beefsteak, but nothing red (or yellow) just yet. Can't wait!

Is it the heat that's keeping them green then? I thought tomatoes were a the-hotter-the-better kind of plant. It's funny you guys are talking about that because my two largest Romas are already as big as any you buy at the store and they're still completely green, but last year my Romas rarely even got to 3/4 "store-size" before they were ready to pick.
