Okay, even tho' many of us are still under a snow blanket, I know there are tomato seedlings in windows, basements, kitchens, mudrooms, etc! Let's start showing them!

Question. Have any of you ever seen a tomato seedling with 3, yes THREE, seed leaves? One of my Dakota Golds has 3 seed leaves - I will try to get a pick and post it for next Tuesday.

I had a spinach and a chard both come up with three seed leaves...I'm betting it's one of the more common (but still rare) mutations you'll see in garden plants.

Think of it as more reserves for your seedling to use...should be leading the pack!

Goosegirl Thanks for sharing this topic! As far as 3 seedling leaves go I'm a newbee with zilch experience. But as the other poster said, more food storage for your baby Very Happy
Todays rain forces me indoors. So I'll pot up my babies (should've been done already) and share a couple pics later on. My first time attempting toms, peppers, flowers, etc. Seem to recall that leggy toms can go deeper, up to a third deeper or more? I hope!

Bury that puppy! Just remember to remove any leaves that would end up under the soil.

I just transplanted my tomatoes in 3-4 in pots the other day full of MM. I swear its like they doubled overnight! Its hard to tell, but my tomatoes were the size of the small guy on the right just a few days ago.

Just for kicks, Ive been hardening off my broccoli the past few days. It, too, shot up just hanging outdoors.

No pics yet, but all 7 tomato plants are permanently outdoors. Last night I got the lawn mowed, then planted up all my seedlings and still had some room so I planted 4 squares with basil seeds. I have had no success starting basil indoors without it getting REALLY leggy, so I am trying it outside. Last night I planted:

3 Amish Paste
2 Porter's Dark Cherry
2 Dakota Gold
8 Calabrese Broccoli
4 squares of Basil
1 Tam Jalapeno (no heat)
3 Lipstick Peppers

Everything is looking good and no rabbit in sight!

R&R - I had the same experience with my toms when I potted them up into larger cups a few weeks ago. WOW! An overnight explosion! They have now been in the SFG beds for 2 days. Supposed to have 4 days of rain now. We shall see if spreading out their little roots makes them REALLY happy now!

2013 Tomato Tuesday - N&C Midwest Empty Need tomato help and update

Post  R&R 1011 6/19/2013, 1:41 am

Ughhh I wrote out a huge post with questions and for some reason it didnt post. Lets try this again!

So far my tomatoes are doing pretty well. Ive got some questions I need help with.

Question #1- This is a non-SFG bed (ran out of money for MM). I ran out of room in my SFG beds, so put some of my Romas in with my herbs. My question is they arent as bushy as my indeterminates, so Im wondering do they look leggy or stunted to you? The bed has a large maple tree next to it that shades it a lot, so they may not be getting enough sun.
2013 Tomato Tuesday - N&C Midwest Img_0214

Question #2- I have some green babies, but noticed atleast 2 of them have these holes. Is it BER, split due to watering, or from a pest? Blight? I have no clue.
2013 Tomato Tuesday - N&C Midwest Img_0215

Thats it. I need to work on my Florida weaving skills and try prop up my stakes better.

?1. They look good to me, just young. They may fill out more as they get bigger. All the Romas I have grown have been rangy looking for the first few feet, then they have filled out a bit more.

?2. Definitely not BER.

Don't feel too bad, LLM - my best tomato plant is only 8 inches tall. Going to take a loooooong time for tomatoes this year. I am already planning ahead protection for the killing frost which is always followed by 3 more weeks of great weather. I will need those 3 weeks to get some ripened!

Yeah, LM, my tomatoes are just starting to really flower and I only found 4 fruits, 2 of which I accidentally broke off while pruning. Sad One with the hole which I took the picture of.

My pepper plants are really small and some just starting to flower as well. Still waiting for my broccoli to pop a head, and I only have 1 tiny pea pod!

I am still waiting to see some fruit, but most of the 13 tomato plants on trellises now have flowers, here's a look at one of the newest boxes.  It's a 2 x 4 ft. x 1ft deep box with cattle panel trellis: that's a potato box in background, now it's wait, wait, wait....

Beautiful, LM! What do you have in front of the tomatoes? We're suppose to try to put up my cattle panel trellis arch way today. I was trying the Florida weave on mine, but the stakes are tipping over and the tomatoes are taking over my pepper squares!

R&R,

Hope you get your stakes and florida weave figured out!

In front of the tomatoes left to right is basil, dwarf marigolds, 4 kinds of carrots, then borage on the far right.  The tomatoes are blueberry blend, weissbehaarte, Italian heirloom, and solar flair.  The tom colors will be red, white, blue, and stripes.

Dakota Golds - :thanky:Cheyannarach!  Front one is puny, back one is much bigger, and looks even bushier because of the volunteer cilantro in front of it.

Porter's Dark Cherry - dwarfed by the carrot behind it!

Amish Paste - by far the best growing so far.

Nice pictures GG!   Summer is just a couple days old, we'll get there.
Your volunteer pic reminded me of a tomato plant I found tonight growing just outside of one of the compost heaps.  Another heap has 2 large yellow squash plants growing right on top. It's almost a devilish delight to find free vigorous plants.  Maybe we should start a new thread with pictures and call it,  Volunteers Only. Razz
