Is peat moss a good wicking agent for self irrigating boxes?

I know that peat holds water, just don't know if I should use some of that at the bottom of the 5 gal bucket or not.

Personally, I'd use coarse vermiculite to sift down amongst the bottles and a bit over them; pack it down well, then put your Mel's Mix on top to plant in. Or, use the suggestion from another inventor who used cut-up throw-away seedling trays to separate the "soil" from the wicking medium around the bottles. Think some weed block would work best to keep the "soil" from sifting down into the vermiculite and making it too dense. What do y'all think?
