May 1st Watermelon
Golden Midget watermelon from Baker Creek harvested yesterday and put in the fridge, seen here with today's harvest.
This was my 5 year old's baby and she was so excited to see it turn yellow (indicating ripeness)
A tiny little thing but great fun to grow in a SFG (trellised)
Definitely her favorite thing we've harvested from the garden!
And I thought the vines were diseased because the leaves were turning yellow, but a little bit of googling today led to the amazing discovery that it's actually normal! There's another one growing, but I slacked off on the hand pollination thinking I'd yank it soon...oops!

Oh, that made my mouth water! I was thinking about starting watermelon seeds today, but I think it's still too early here. I hope it was awesome!!

Re: May 1st Watermelon
It's good...juicy and sweet, but not an overwhelmingly strong flavor. I wouldn't pick it as the best watermelon I've ever had but certainly not anywhere among the worst, and most definitely the best I've ever grown.
