How to use fertilome Dipel dust? Empty How to use fertilome Dipel dust?

Post  HPartin 5/2/2011, 2:44 pm

I am ready to conquer the ole cabbage looper after buying the Dipel dust made by Fertilome. The directions seem a bit vague. The directions say to use 1/2 ounce. What I don't get is how to measure 1/2 ounce of dust; 1/2 ounce per plant? Per worm? Do I apply it every day? After a rain? Occasionally over the summer?

Has anyone used this and can direct me a little better? The lady at the gardening center had no idea.

Thanks in advance

Fertilome Dipel Dust

The following is a snip from the PDF file

Simply dust this product on Plants at the rates listed below.
Dust to thoroughly cover all Plant surfaces.
Apply when Pests appear and repeat as necessary.
Apply recommended number of ounces (ozs.) below to 50 sq. ft. for Vegetable and Turf treatment.

Hope this helps

I had to use Dipel dust a few weeks ago. I will tell you that it is very difficult to control the rate of flow of the stuff. It doesn't flow easily or evenly, and I finally gave up and just let it cover what it was going to cover, at whatever flow rate it ended up coming out. I did not try to apply to every leaf, and I did not apply it to the undersides of anything. That would have taken me forever! It worked anyway; I stopped having gashes and holes cut in my leaves. It rained several days later, and I did not reapply, preferring to see if it was necessary. It wasn't.

I have had a little damage done to the leaves from the dust, perhaps because much of it came out so thickly (it was thickly, or not at all). I ended up with some small brown spotting here and there, but that was it. Much less damage than the cutworms were doing.

Now I need to spray my turnip greens. Flea beetles have turned them into lace. affraid

I bought my dipel dust in a bag so I was a little confused about how to measure an ounce (or 1/2 an ounce). I decided that it was about a tablespoon. [Why the directions don't suggest how to measure this is a little frustrating. I think they want us to use more than necessary so that we will go out buy more after using too much.] However, because I was sprinkling it on the plants by hand that was really hard to gauge. I read somewhere on the forum that someone used pantyhose to dust plants. I think that would be a lot easier. I will try that the next time. Unfortunately, I don't have any of that satanic leg wrapping anywhere in my house Smile. I am going to have to ask a lady at church for a pair of old pantyhose. A little creepy but worth it!

You can get dust despencers. My dad had one that looked like a little plastic bellows. You put the dust product in and just squeeze and it would shoot a small cloud of the product out. He used it to apply sevin dust on flowers years ago.

Try putting it in an old sock and beat it against a piece of wood or your gloved hand over,
through and around your plants. Be sure to ware a mask or bandanna over your
face so as to not breathe the dust.

As someone who unfortunately just this past week had to dust their chickens for mites with a garden pesticide dust, I can attest to the method of putting the dust in the foot of an old stocking and tying it off, and rubbing it or powder puffing it on the object to be dusted.

I wore a dust mask, eyewear, rubber gloves, and even a mosquito net over my head. I hate toxic stuff.

My Dipel dust came in a shaker like talcum powder. But here's an idea I use for Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) dust which will work for any dust you buy by the bag. I use an empty plastic Parmesan cheese container. Since the holes were a little too large I removed the lid and stretched a layer of cheese cloth over the opening then screwed the lid back on. I think this year I'll try cutting a piece from plastic mesh onion bag. It's stiffer and will probably work better.

Any plastic jar with an opening you can fill easily would work, just use a rubberband to hold on the piece of mesh.

Works for me!

I agree with patti pan...I used a costco cinnamon shaker similarly.

Or if you have a mason jar drill some teeny tiny holes in the lid and shake away!

How dangerous is that bacillis (sp?) in the Fertiloam Dipel to humans?
and, can you wash it off the plants - sure spoils the look of flowers (altho alot less than the earwigs were doing javascript:emoticonp('Rolling Eyes') )

I am new to this forum - I do not see any of the other replies having a title. Are folks just ignoring it or do I need to copy in the post title??

Just ignore the title and it will assume you mean to repeat the thread title. Type something else in if you want a different heading for your reply. Took me a while to figure that out so congrats on swiftness. Otherwise I can offer nothing else to your inquiry, sorry. The overnight crew is usually kinda sparse, by sunrise you should have a few answers. I'm just the janitor here and now is my chance to pretend I am important.

Highdesertgardner I did type fretilome dipel in the google search box at top left and did get quite a few hits for that topic. You want to check the box there to keep your search within this forum or if you don't the search will go global. You mite want to ask your question again below as people tend to not always read up the recent post list too far and I only answered a small sidebar portion of your question.

Highdesertgardner, BT is not harmful to humans. Diple dust also contains talc that is harmful if inhaled. I use a liquid BT from gardens alive called Green step caterpillar control so I don't have to mess with masks, or risk inhaling it. http://www.fertilome.com for more info. Dipple dust safety MSDS sheet is on their site.
Hope this helps.
