Compost Selection Help

I am on the new SFG member’s mission of collecting five different types of compost for our SFG. I am left with the question of whether or not steer manure and chicken manure can be considered different types of compost since they are both types of manure.

Hi,
Welcome to the forum. Yes, chicken and steer manure are considered two different types of manure.
Having picked them, they are a good example of why the simplicity of the SFG system is so effective. One is acidic, and one is alkaline, so they tend to balance each other out in the pH tolerance range of veggies. By getting a mix of various composts, we don't have to worry about nutrient deficiencies or pH imbalances. Just mix and plant, water and wait, and you'll soon be eating fresh veggies from your garden!

I was wondering about the manures...thanks for someone asking! I'm having trouble finding a variety of compost at my garden centers to get me started. I have access to aged horse & cow manure. What is your opinion of using horse? I've started a compost pile, but it is not ready. Are bagged soil conditioners considered compost? That seems to be what is being sold around here.

I'm sure the horse manure is fine, but you will want it to be done composting.

I'm not sure what all of the soil conditioners are. Here in Utah there's one called "Utilite Soil Conditioner" or something like that. As far as I can tell it's a special kind of gravel meant for breaking up the clay soil. It has no compost in it.
