Weed cloth on top?
Anyone cover their SFG with weedcloth on top of mel's mix to discourage weeds? I make x shaped holes and plant my seed or sprouts leaving the rest covered up.

I really don't bother to be honest. The weeds are so few and far between (in my experience) that simple hand pulling the little buggers is really easy. Takes me 5 minutes to do all four boxes once a week. I'm not sure if you've got a season under your belt yet or not but if this is your first time, I'd suggest you can save some money by hand pulling the very FEW you MIGHT get (especially if you mulch). Up to you of course but throwing in my 00.2 cents.

Re: Weed cloth on top?
I'd suggest not doing that in your region this time of year ....
A) Probably not needed if yr using MM
B) I've seen comments/concerns about "hot roots" from covered soil, small quantities of soil and/or small containers, etc.
I don't know that the benefit would outweight the risk on an SFG box.
I'd consider mulch before I'd consider weedblock

This is in the top 3 reasons I love Mel's Mix! If you are not using it you are missing out!

Well in Monterey it never gets too warm for too long, and I am using MM , but with pearlite, as vermiculite in this area is too hard to find and too expensive when found.
I'll upload some pics soon.

I wouldn't do it. With this system you shouldn't get many weeds, and the roots of your plants will probably rot.
