Planting fruit trees near or around SFG?
I am trying to lay out my future garden and I am wanting it to be pretty, and inviting, but also laid out correctly. I know nothing about planting fruit trees, but I know in the future I will want to learn and do that. I have my SFG boxes planned and have a diagram of the layout, but I am wondering where I should plan to plant the trees? I would love to eventually have pear, plum, peach, and maybe a few other things like berries. I have no idea how close to the boxes I can plant a tree, due to the shade issue, and root issue, how big the trees may get, etc.... Is there any information on this? Are you suppose to just plan on planting your fruiting trees somewhere else besides in your garden area? We have 60 acres so finding a different location won't be a problem if needed, I just thought it would be pretty if they could be in the area of the garden. My garden area will be a 36 x 48 foot area, with a variety of different sized boxes. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've looked at all of the gallery pictures and there are some really pretty gardens!!!!

Re: Planting fruit trees near or around SFG?
I only have 1/4 acre of land so I am limited in what I can grow. My gardening beds were built before I had heard of SFG so they are larger than 4x4. We fortunately or unfortunately depending on how you look at it we have a number of very large shade trees. The boxes were placed in one of the few places we felt got the largest amount of sun that we could also fence off from the dogs.
Last year we added 2 dwarf peach trees four feet from the fence line to allow for spread. I would like to add a couple of dwarf cherry and plum. I think I might try putting at least two in the front yard and the other two I am not sure. I think they need a lot of sun and I don't want them to shade the garden so that seems to be out. I am also trying to draw up plans to had a nice rabbit hutch and possibly more raised beds in the front of the house because it gets a full day of sunshine.
Probably not much help to you but maybe some ideas you have not thought of. Like dwarf trees or shading issues.

Re: Planting fruit trees near or around SFG?
I am by no means an expert on this, however, I would think that you want the fruit trees on the north side of your SFG. This would maximize the sunlight that hits your garden. For example, in a 4X4 box, you would want your tall plants on the north squares so they minimize the amount of sun that hit the smaller plants on the other squares.
In my SFG I had at our old home, we had large shade trees on the west end of our back yard and that was the worst place to have them because they blocked much of the sun in the later part of the day. It wasn't too bad in the summer, however, it made gardening difficult in other seasons because they only got about 3 hours of sun during the short days of the year. Hope this helps.
