Seed starting confusion
Here's my
Cosmos:
* Jung Seed company, For earlier bloom start the seed 5 to 7 weeks prior to planting out...or sow outside as soon as the soil warms up in the spring (no air or soil temperature given)
* Thompson and Morgan, 3 varieties - all say okay to start indoors, plant outside after all risk of frost
* Johnny's - recommends outdoors
Borage:
* John Scheepers - may be started indoors
* Renee's - sow directly as borage has a long tap root that doesn't like to be disturbed.
I have run into several of these contradictions, some more distinct than others. I and I .
It's not a problem for me, I am starting some now and I'll start some directly outside and see what happens, but

Re: Seed starting confusion
I started my borage indoors and transplanted as soon as it was warm enough and it looks fine so far.
Re: Seed starting confusion
Hmmm, must have missed that warning. I started 2, one is doing great the other died. So I guess both are right.

Re: Seed starting confusion
I've tried both of these; indoor sowed = failure. Direct sow outside = pretty flowers
Re: Seed starting confusion
I have borage started indoors (my mystery seedling, lol) that is doing nicely in a pot outside right now.

Re: Seed starting confusion
But what do you suppose is up with the different directions? I get that there are different opinions, and I get that some things are borderline.
In the meantime, it's supposed to rain all week so planting things inside gives me something to do!

Re: Seed starting confusion
I always sowed Cosmos seeds directly outdoors and had no problems here in Maine.
