making compost

I bought a nifty composter at Sams club. Any start-up suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I'll get pics up soon, waiting on trellis netting to complete.

I'm in a simplistic mood tonight. So, my advice may be thwarted by more sophisticated posters.

Take some old compost, or maybe buy a small bag of some kind of compost and toss it in to get things started. Heck, add a scoop or two of your very own dirt in your yard. You are looking for some beneficial bacteria and/or nematodes to get the ball rolling as you add other things.

Start saving your kitchen scraps. Things like egg shells, salad leftovers, potato peels, coffee grounds and filters, even some paper towels (a few) or shredded unwaxed cardboard, and the list goes on and on and on. Avoid meat and dairy...although I think some people will toss cheese in there. Start tossing that stuff in the composter.

Look around your yard for leftover leaf rubbish. Save a couple bags of grass clippings. After doing yardwork, dry that stuff out on the patio or driveway for a few hours in the sun, and toss it in.

There are other things to add. In fact, there's a thread devoted to all the compostables somewhere on the web if you search.....it may even be here.

But, that stuff, added in a balanced fashion, will give you some fabulous compost in time. Hope that helps.

You want lots more browns than you do greens to make great compost.

I double chop my stuff. the smaller it is , the faster it compost.(can use mower)
And for kitchen scraps you can use the processor .
