BTW, the stage play Steel Magnolias, and the film are subtlely different, and the play (done by a competent troop of actors) is definitely the best. The play is based on a true story (author Harling's sister's death) and her friends/family. Poignant.

Boris says Hi. Getting bigger by the day. Normaly I pinch my ind. toms to one leader but thinking about letting him/her have two. As far as movies that make me cry I turn to the classics and watch "The grapes of Wrath" way before chick flicks and if some one man or woman does not cry at least once during that film there is something wrong with then. Sounds like you better catch Engine #9 to the Funny Farm!

lol! Awesome!

As for the tear-jerking movies......I gotta say, I only watch them once. I don't watch movies to make myself cry....it's akin to self-mutilation imo.

My criteria for a "Classic" is simple: Guy gets girl, movie makes me laugh, no one dies.

Simple as that.

What a bizarre thread...my wife knows darn well that Steel Magnolias will clear the house out regardless of the time, day or night. Roger Miller can pull up a chair in front of my shop wood stove any time...uh...is he still kickin'?

When I was trying to think of a name for my Cherokee Purple, the only rhyme I could come up with was Maple Surple! (You know you've listened to too much Roger Miller when...)

Perhaps his most important advice for us gardeners: You can't go fishing in a watermelon patch... but you can be happy if you've a mind to. Smile

When things get bad, I head outside, even if it's really too cold to, and sit and watch my garden grow, or sleep. Three songs go through my mind, 2 are Roger Miller, the line You Can Be Happy If You've A Mind To, and Do Waka Do. I know the Do Waka Do, is just a silly line, but it makes me smile. The last song, which is sometimes the first, is Garry Allen's version of What Would Willie Do. Now my idea of recreation is not the same as Willie's, but when he was broke he pulled himself up by his boot straps and went on tour. Sometimes we just have to pick ourselves up and go on.

I now have a name for my newest boxes, they are 10x2's and they are currently holding tomatoes, but in a few years they will be home to grapes and raspberries, I call them grape alley. Maybe I should get out the book Grapes of Wrath (way better than the movie, which they changed the sequence of events and added stuff to the story, just my opinion) and find a name for those boxes to honor John Steinbeck.

I had the utmost pleasure to be in the stage version of Steel Magnoilas as a Senior in High School - I got to play Clarice, the mayor's wife. Still one of my favorite plays I've ever been in - and my favorite line as well, "What's wrong with you Ouiser, you got a raindeer up your butt?" (must be spoken with a southern accent of course...)

Maybe I'll name one of my cabbages Clarice? Name your mascot.. - Page 2 88662

My favourite quote from the movie was when Truvy said "Smile! It increases your face value!". I use that one all the time. Tomatoes make me smile, so I'm going to name one of my tomatoes Truvy. This is fun! Very Happy

BR you could take the song "Trully Scrupmtious" from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and change it to Truvey Scrumptious and sing to your plant.

I am not the only one who names my compost pile!! HA!! So here on the forum we have Madame Heap AND Gomer Pile. They are an amazing couple.

(Aub.....you better be careful. All you need is for your kids to say that in the middle of a crowded restaurant or grocery store and you will be in BIG trouble. LOL! Shocked )

Old (but) Hip, yup, you're right. When I was working in Portland, an hour to and from work/home, very infrequently did I know when I got home what I was going to cook for the evening meal. A quick check on ingredients in 'fridge and garden, and I was ready to cook. But our then-gradeschool son, Peter, was one who always asked first off, "What are we going to have for dinner?" Still deciding, I sometimes answered, "Swill." Then came the day when the teacher at Peter's school called and, hem and hawing, asked about our meal planning. Seems the class's discussion about nutrition had degenerated somewhat when the teacher asked the class, "What did you have for dinner last night?" And Peter, waving his arm in the air, responded proudly: "Swill, we had swill!" The teacher indicated she didn't think swill was adequate for a child's nutrition.

BUMP....for relevence.

I finally have a mascot of my own now. Murphy the Chipmunk. He is named after Murphy's Law because he is wreaking havoc in my garden ONLY where I can't handle it. If I plant a square, he hits it. If I am about to harvest a square, he digs it up. It's like he has ESP and knows where I am going next.

Why can't you take out my bolting spinach, Murph? Why can't you dig in the squares lying fallow for the time being, Murph? I know they've been fallow for a week, and you haven't touched them the whole time. If I pop a seed in that square, though, I'll see your mark in there within 24 hours........you jerk.

He is now Public Enemy #1 around my homestead...lol.
