Wood based Compost Empty Wood based Compost

Post  Kabaju42 3/3/2010, 9:47 am

I must have registered and posted this question just a few hours before the new site came online. Oh well.

Last year I cut down some trees and rented a chipper to break them down, which resulted in a large pile of wood chips in my yard. Since then I've been trying to add other organic matter to make compost, but it isn't much compared to the amount of wood. Now I'm going to start some SQFs this year, and I'm wondering if I can use my pile for the compost part of Mel's mix, or maybe mix it in with other compost. Any thoughts?

From my own experience, I also had a tree cut down and chipped to use for mulch. It sat a year, and what I found was down at the bottom inside the pile it had decomposed and I was able to use that with my compost, and by second year it was mostly all decomposed, and I added it in with my other compost.

a neighbor chopped down a tree last year and let me have some of the wood chips - i used it as mulch around my boxes. worked great! so that's an idea, too if you have mulch that didn't compost fast enough for use in boxes. . .
