Saturday, we're going to the campus my daughter will be attending next year to meet and talk with the softball coach, watch a home game, and tour the campus.
Sunday, gonna finally get a few beds built, filled, and planted. We'll put up a simple fence around the garden to keep our big boy and his big paws out of those nice fluffy diggable beds.

Might go to the Ren Faire outside of Raleigh on Saturday. When you say your building a bat house? You mean an actual house for bats? Isn't that kind of... I don't know, scary?

Sounds like you've got your work cut out for you, and we'll have just the right kind of weather for you to get it done!
I think this weekend I'm going to setup my trellis. My snow peas have a mind of their own. They are already looking for something to grab on to!

Bats are a good thing to have near your house they eat a lot of night bugs especially mosquitoes and bat manure(guano) is supposed to be good fertilizer. Bats and Purple martins are to good things to have near your house, but not in your house

Re: Ideas for the weekend
Saturday I am going to go do Concealed Weapon class. My hubby is gone at night, I so don't like living alone! Have had to many kids with weird friends! Rofl..guess I don't have to have a permit to have a gun in the house but I just want the certificate! Never shot a gun in my life but I own three rofl...
Sunday my sister is coming with an invisible fence thingy. We are going to start training my miniature schnauzer that you don't bolt just because you broke your collar! This time is was only a block because she decide she liked the lady that came out of the house to see why HER dogs were barking!
I am going to start hardening off my plants also. Ready to get them in the ground!

Re: Ideas for the weekend
Glad to see you are taking the class...it will be good for you. I hate being alone at night too, so I understand. Make sure you go shoot several hundred rounds through that thing so you feel comfortable with it...
I hopefully will be taking my CCP this summer too. Might be what I ask for for Mother's Day!
Good luck with the dog.

Re: Ideas for the weekend
These are the plans I used to make a bat house. I figured if a 7 year old could do it...
The house turned out fine; I guess the gable of my house was not the right place for it. It's still vacant after a year

Re: Ideas for the weekend
I see them occasionally throughout the summer. I certainly have enough bugs for them to eat.
I plan to relocate the house when it quits raining. Hopefully, it really is about location, location, location!

Re: Ideas for the weekend
We have bats here in central British Columbia at least there were some out in the country at a place we lived at for a year. I am not sure if there are any in the city or not. DH would like to build a bat house and try to attract some. But Wolfheart was saying that they are difficult to attract. They seem to like a water source close by which we do not have. He thought we might have an easier time attracting them once we get a pond built. We don't actually have a problem with mosquitoes so without a water source or food source, it is not very likely that they would take up residence in our yard, even if we had a Bat Hilton.
The bat guano would be great and it would just be interesting to have another type of wildlife to watch.

Re: Ideas for the weekend
I've got seeds to restart, boxes to build, mix to mix, kitties to vaccinate, lawns to mow. I'm looking forward to the building part of our program.
Bats are great, but you sure don't want them in your house. We have friends that lost their third story to them, and it's no simple matter to get rid of them as they are protected. We placed a bat house in the field behind the house last year, but so far we haven't had any takers. I might move it out to the main field. I've heard that the population has dropped due to a "nose fungus" that's killed a large part of their population in this part of the country. Not sure what "large" means or if it's limited to the South East.
Bats are common to the entire U.S. so and they are more so in the North East than in the South East.
Hope everyone enjoys the weekend!

Spot on Gwynn. No water = no bats. A small pond however will do. It's fun to watch them "drink and fly". (lol)

I have a few seeds and plants. They seem to have handled transplanting into the raw chicken litter so I think they are hardy. Would you like a few?

I will be trying once again to build boxes. Weather has not cooperated so far, but I may have a short window of a few hours tomorrow afternoon before the thunderstorm is supposed to start. Don't want to be out in that - hair already looks like I stuck my finger in a light socket!

Ideas for the weekend ... and bat houses
We certainly do have bats here in the Northwest. We enjoy sitting out on the deck on the East side of the house just at dusk in the summer and watch the bats swoop and swirl around feasting on the bugs. I suspect some of them have taken up residence in the stonework on our chimney since we had a round metal liner put in the center of it (it's rectangle, the liner is round), so there are spaces in the corners that would appeal to bats. Read a couple of years ago about some farmers up the Columbia River Gorge who learned that, if they erected bat houses in their corn fields, even without pesticides, the incidence of corn ear worm was drastically reduced. So, I take that to mean--Go BATS!

As far as herbs go, I live in northern KY and I have planted a ton of basil inside a greenhouse and indoors because I love pesto and need a lot of basil. You could also start sage and oregano inside as well.... these all grew for me last year....
